yep, hence why with the latest version of osx, snow leopard, now has anti-malware protection built in. osx is still "safe", but its slowly starting to gain mass adoption. more people that use it, better chance of viruses/trojans appearing on that platform.

Apple doesn't make products for "power users". Its made to be intuitive, easy to use, aesthetically pleasing, and fully plug and play. If you want to break past that, get another device and hack it.

If apple bashers spent 5 seconds researching and/or actually using their products they'd realize that it's just another option in computing with both strengths and weaknesses. The same can be said for windows bashers, etc, etc.

Why is it so hard for people to just accept that every OS and platform has both good and bad things about it and they just need to choose the right tool for the right job? Zealots are fucking pathetic and have no business in computers if their blind hatred for something clouds their judgement.

Yeah. Apple really does cater to a segment of computer users. I never understood why people are so vehement about expressing their hate for Apple. Apple products, in particular the Mac OS, are designed to appeal mostly to that segment, and you can see that in their marketing, especially in the past few years.

iTunes does really suck, though. It's a load of bloatware, poorly designed if all you need to do is transfer files and manage playlists. I just use Winamp for this, which took me about 2 seconds to figure out. Drag and drop - the way I like it. I do like the iPods I've owned and used (mini, shuffle, video, nano), but never liked iTunes.

My favorite moment in an apple store.
I was there with a friend who wanted an iPod. Well there was this salesman blabbing the usual dogma of how macs are superior.
Him: "And the best things about macs is no viruses! They are immune to viruses!"
Me: "Really?? Then why do you sell *reaches over and picks up* THIS?!"

There's about one million viruses and countless malware that targets the PC, where the Mac has about two actual, real-world threats. I'll keep using a Mac while Windows remains the honeypot for all that crap.

I'll use Linux (Ubuntu) for secure environment (it's free, and so is most of the software), and Windows for any of the thousands of programs that run only on Windows.

I'd use Mac OS, but other than looking pretty, there are very few things you can do exclusively with it. It is a "friendlier" OS, I'll give it that, but not the best for power users who have a range of needs.

I think the hate is more for those Apple users who preach about the cult they have joined and nothing on earth can compare. :)

Plus the hack in question was a URL exploit. Firefox + noscript + no flash for the win here.

We are tired of the stuck up, snobby attitudes of most Apple users and can't believe how uninformed a lot of them actually are. The endless misleading Apple commercials don't help

It's still an exploit that took over the whole system.

You have have IE just to not use js, reject all activex and only browse allowed urls, buuuuuuuuuut the only problem is that it would drive everyone nuts. That's where firefox wins when it has plugins, without it's no better or worse than IE8 stock. :)

Lol, How does hating a certain product or brand suddenly make someone unable to make decisions in the computer industry? Maybe there is a good reason I hate apple branded stuff, did you ever weigh that in? Blind defense of a company is just as bad as blind hatred of it.

and yes, there are several reasons I can list for disliking apple. Good Objective reasons mind you. Can you give me good objective reasons to defend apple?

I have a degree in computer science and have a mac as my main machine... "power users" on this forum translates to "people doing windows tech support a la geek squad and messing around with windows themes". Real power users use unix.

OSX is fantastic for development, all the open source support (+ ports), X11 + all the libraries and a very efficient UI on top of that.

The security is mostly though obscurity, OSX doesn't have stack randomization and non-execute address space IIRC.

iTunes is alright, except for the store. The store and especially the search is a complete garbage.

And how many viruses are spread over the internet? How many internet users use a browser other then the default one that comes with the OS?

Have all the people saying "OSX isn't for power users" actually extensively used it? Are you aware that it was built upon BSD and you can use a fully functioning Unix Shell? I would think that some of these "Power Users" know this, but it sounds like they don't.

You didn't get the memo... Power Users here means folks that themed their windows desktop beyond recognition and have 30 different fans in and around the computer case.

It's pretty sad, but people want to play their Call of Duty and Fallout or whatever.

TBH, I can do just fine with Photoshop CS4, Lightroom, Office 2008. I can do what I need to get done on my PC. Sure when I game I'd game on my desktop anyway, so forget my MBP, but in terms of productivity, I can get most things done on my Mac. I don't see why people hate all the time.

And for all you who download and torrent like mad and use newsgroups, I haven't skipped a beat of that because I'm on my MBP.

You can do the same with themes with Macs. And by themes you mean they install stupid stuff like WindowsBlinds and stuff right? Not by actually modifying their shell or using a UXTheme patch because I would never install bloatware like DesktopX or whatever the hell they have to make your desktop look "cool"

Because people like to express their own opinion(s)?

I can't find a single freaking reason - none whatsoever - that I should even consider using an Apple computer. Its UI is (IMO) hideous, the UI for changing settings and etc are all extremely frustrating for me to use. I'm used to Windows, I know Windows, I know how to manipulate Windows, and I know how to change settings within Windows that Microsoft doesn't want users to change. If I come across something that I don't know in an MS app, I just use google or support.microsoft.com, and I've found the answer quickly. Not so with Apple -- I've spent hours and hours trying to resolve problems caused by users that are just trying to work. Problems that I would have been able to resolve in minutes on a Windows system, or less.

I own an iPod, but I hate the infernal thing on front that you screw with in order to make it do anything.

That said, I know that there are a few areas in which Apple is preferred. None of them apply to me. I therefore have no problems with voicing my vitriolic hatred for that godforsaken company.

And given OSX is Unix with BSD on top you'd probably be just as frustrated with Linux. It's just stuff you're not familiar with, and just because some people think it's cool to hate on Apple, you can join right in. You might as well go and insult Linux too and the millions of web servers powered on Linux.
