I have two experiences w/ recent MACs. I use a PPC 7200 w/ a G3 processor upgrade at work to do some CAD stuff (cause I don't have the software available to me on PC). I also will use a co-worker's G4 400 on occasion to stuff like scanning since that's what our scanner and CF card reader is hooked up to. Those systems work ok but 9.2.x crashes like you wouldn't believe

New macs: My friend and I used his grandpa's dual 867 G4 to make a DVD. That was quite impressive. The software was very intuitive and the DVD came out great. To my knowledge his grandpa has had no issues with that machine. Now, onto the other one. One of the guys at the office bought a G4 about 4 months ago. Don't recall the speed but I think it was more then a gig. He, on the otherhand, has had nothing but problems with his machine. Seems to be hardware related since reinstalls of the OS do nothing towards solving the problem. Needless to say, he's very glad he bought applecare but wow, the problems he tells us about are just astounding and some just downright strange.
