I suppose the chip is to make sure drivers are not crossing state lines to get it much cheaper, what a damn joke. And the with the outrageous toll prices and putting tolls on the border, damn when will it end?
The gas tax is a substitution to raising tolls and adding additional tolls.
Fuck tolls. Massachusetts is a small state and should be able to keep its infrastructure up and running without nickel and diming everyone to death. Other states do it quite well without tolls. If they want to use a gas tax to keep their infrastructure up and running, fine, but the tracking/chip is overkill and a violation of privacy.
The chip is not a violation of privacy.
It is tracking a vehicle which has been given permission by the state to use the infrastructure. It is not tracking a person.
One does not have to register the vehicle or inspect it.
If you choose to take the risk of running afoul of MA laws, that is your choice.
From what I've heard about Massachusetts, there are many areas where it is impractical to avoid all toll roads. Besides, considering that the owner of a vehicle is the person driving in most cases, the effect of this IS an invasion of privacy. Inspecting and registering a vehicle is reasonable and does not constitute and invasion of privacy, but tracking someone's movements IS, which is what this system will effectively do.
The toll roads in MA are the Mass Pike (I90) and the tunnels from the Airport to downtown Boston. They used to have on on Rt 1 on the Mystic bridge (unsure if it is still there) into Boston.
To get to the airport, then 3 of 4 roads requires tolls.
To get into the Boston area from the West requires use of a toll road or US20 or Rt 2.
Toll roads are not required.
