M1911 guys, Springfield Mil-Spec still a good one?

My buddy was in the gun biz a good while. He hooked me up with a local LEO, whom I bough it from used, but in excellent condition. Owned it about 5yrs, and was very happy with it. He didn't do anything to it either, and I liked the 3 dot sights.

Never carried, so cannot comment on that.

Did not shoot many, since even at his price, they were expensive. But my friend provided some Hydra-shok 230 grains, and it was a scary beast. We would go to the "range" all the locals knew about. By range, I mean, a large mound of sand for a backstop, in the woods. Looking at one after digging it out of a pine tree, certainly provides one with confidence in its capabilities.

Hmm...their site and my local gun store were a litle misleading then, they only list the GP6 (Grand Power in Slovakia) and Spartan (Armscorp in Phillipines) models as being from foreign sources saying the rest are built in Georgetown, TX...maybe that's how they slip that in..."built" not made. Oh well, they're still damn nice weapons, I've got to get down there and see that place.

Newsflash, shooting a handgun is a lot different than centering some crosshairs in a game and clicking a mouse button. It is the most difficult weapon platform to master for a reason.

Built is the key word. The 3 main parts I mentioned are all made over seas, and the gun is "built here in Texas.

Doesn't make them any less of a gun. I'd love to have a STI Ranger II
 
The STI Spartan is the best 1911 for the money IMHO. It's ugly but the internals and fitment are top notch.

"Built" is definitely the operative word, and the Ranger II is pretty sweet, been considering the VIP in 9mm myself, it feels like a dream and I've been told it shoots even better.

Shame about the looks. I am not one to care about the appearance of tools, including guns (I love Glocks, which are, at best, utilitarian in looks), but the 1911 is a beautiful design IMO, yet STI has gratuitously uglified it. I'd need someone to really educate me on why I shouldn't spend a little more and get a Springfield.

Qualifying it for the money I will agree.

It's like the WalMart M1911...rough around the edges, but gets the job done reliably.

I don't think this would be the gun for me though.

I am leaning toward maybe TRP....still don't know if $3000 is going to be worth it. The TRP is about half the price of the other semi/customized guns and gets really good reviews.

you can show that boy up with two beemers man...do it! That'd be so money...tits even, money on tits!

seriously though at that price point there are a lot of good guns...the STI I usually see priced higher than the Mil-Spec.

The Spartan seems to be an online favorite...there are a lot of bad reviews of it though...the Mil-Spec I was drawn too because while other guns are said to be slightly better the Mil-Spec really didn't do anything wrong.

I am leaning to a higher budget now...I am figuring compared to other expenses and that I am not going to be buying multiple guns.
 
If money was no object, in your shoes I'd poney up for Commander sized carry from Wilson Combat.

A Kimber will serve you well and cost hundreds, maybe a grand less.

The bottom category for me here would be a Mil Spec Springer, that would then get some trigger works and a few other additions. I have no experience with Rock River.

Maybe I'm just blind but what's so "ugly" about it? Aside from the front serrations and different sights it's prettty much a standard 1911...

Serrations don't bother me in the least, personally I think I was ignoring the behemoth lettering on the side though, that is an eye sore...not quite a show stopper for me but I can see how it could be for some.
 
I have the following 1911s and would recommend any of them:

Kimber Tactical Custom II
Kimber Eclipse (10mm)
Springfield Compact Operator
Smith & Wesson

Springfield's are great, but finding them in stock is nearly impossible and the waiting time is months.
