IIRC this was discussed in another thread.

It looks like the Army is moving to the XM-8. Though, I heard the the Marines just let new contracts for the M16 and M4.

Edit: Also the 6.8 is still under consideration, but there are political and logistical considerations.

Looks like something out of Starship Troopers. Now all you need is a LED readout of the remaining shells on the side and this would be the coolest weapon ever. :)

Yeah I love that gun. You can mod the crap out of it, even switch the caliber of ammo used!

It's about time.

I fired a earlier version of the M16 back in 71. The one and only time I fired it on "rock and roll" I got off three rounds before it jammed.

And THIS was with a rifle FRESH from the armorer. (clean)

I wasn't even born in 71, old man. :D My dad was in the Army around the same time, he'd be delighted to hear about the XM-8.

I've fired M16's fully automatic MANY times. It rarely jammed on me. I've fired lots of different kinds of sub-machine guns on full auto, and the m-16 is more stable than alot of others.

Good German Gun, I have fired a G36 which is similar. Nice weapon. Surprisingly lightweight.

Whatever happened to that OIWC? gun? The one with a grenade launcher with 6 rounds in it that you can set to blow up after a certain time so it can explode right above a foxhole? Or was that just an imaginery gun I played in a video game....hmmm

I haven't had experience firering a lot of guns, so I can't compare, but EVERY time I've fired an M16 it has jammed (within 1-2 clips).

The funny thing is that the G36/XM8 is really just a refinement of the AR-18.

I think that program was scrapped. The XM8 is the rifle part of that program.

Actually, no, it's still being developed... and it's not grenade, just regular HE round, working in conjunction with lazer range finder and computer control bullets.

I could have sworn that it was shelved due to costs.

Re elect the current lead monkey in the whitehouse and find out if it's shelved or not. Somebody has got to make serious money on arm contracts, it's not you, and it's sure as hell not me.
