The Purple Heart yes... the Bronze Star.. well there are a few different categories... combat is one.. but what was it for... what did she do? Good thing I'm a devout coward.. otherwise I might have reason to be somewhat upset..

3-13. Bronze Star Medal
a. The Bronze Star Medal was established by Executive Order 9419, 4 February 1944 (superseded by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962).

b. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Army of the United States after 6 December 1941, distinguished himself or herself by heroic or meritorious achievement or service, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy; or while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

c. Awards may be made for acts of heroism, performed under circumstances described above, which are of lesser degree than required for the award of the Silver Star.

d. The Bronze Star Medal may be awarded for meritorious achievement or meritorious service according to the following:

(1) Awards may be made to recognize single acts of merit or meritorious service. The lesser degree than that required for the award of the Legion of Merit must nevertheless have been meritorious and accomplished with distinction.

You're right, we did not fight so we are really not in a position to talk sh!t. I'm not blaming Jessic Lynch for getting wounded, nor am I disputing the fact that it must have taken immense courage for her to survive her ordeal, I mean, she's just a kid. What pisses me off about all this is how she was used as a propaganda tool. They made up this big production about what happened to her and made her out to be a hero, something I do not beleive she is. In a way she is a "victim" of our need to have heores to make ourselves feel better about our actions.

I still fail to see the basis for the award.. Perhaps someone will, using what I edited in above, edify me..

I agree with your statement after the first sentence...

I agree with you, I don't think she deserved it either. What I was saying is how sad it is that she was used as a propaganda tool by so many. I just wanted to put forth that it is unfair to blame her in any way for all the publicity she has received. She is a "manufactured" hero of circumstance.

WTF? She got lost, shot and had to be rescued and she gets a medal? Nothing against her personally but the passing out of medals like candy just cheapens them.

I remember playing Gunship2000 many years ago, if I set the game difficulty to the highest I couldnt get my chopper to take off, it would just lift up a bit and then crash. For some reason I was given a purple heart for each crash.

maybe they should have given the Bronze Star to her close friend and the leader of her group that died in the cross-fire from what I read, they put up strong resistance against the enemy and in doing so might have saved Lynch.... Purple Heart seemed more appropriate award for Lynch from what I read.

Why don't you start calling the whole military baby killers and spit on them when they return, rather than singling them out? Or does it make you feel better this way?

She wasn't shot - she was in a vehicle accident. A minor but quite relevant point when it comes to talking about Jessica Lynch.

Cheers,

I thought she actually was shot but was not stabbed like they first tried saying? I knew there was some controversy over her actual injuries.

I can tell you're angry - and quite honestly I'm sure she deserves a purple heart, or something (I'm no expert on who deserves what medal) - but having read your comment, and then every other comment in this thread - I think you're sounding off. No one has mentioned anything about "evil" soldiers. People have been disputing if she deserves a medal, which one if so, and if this whole thing is just political circus and not founded on the principles normally required to such receive decoration.

Cheers,

Andy

As far as I can tell from the aftermath of all of this - she wasn't shot, she wasn't stabbed. Her HUMVEE was hit by another US vehicle after coming under RPG fire. This is what caused her injuries.

If I'm wrong about the cause of the vehicle accident, someone please feel free to correct me.

Cheers,

Andy

EDIT: Found this quote from the official report into the events surrounding her capture/rescue:

Lynch was severely injured, it says, when her Humvee crashed into a 5-tonne US semi-trailer at high speed after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade while trying to escape an Iraqi ambush.

I just found this:

You appear to be correct. It comes from the official report into the events surrounding her.

I dunno, if Tony Blair deserves a medal, then Jessica deserves one too. Now if Bush begins walking around wearing a chest full of medals, I think it would be wise to head for the shelter in the basement.

I think they have been pretty quite about this actually. Same as nobody has really come out and really pointed out that she was never actually shot (at least in anything I have ever read). Kinda bad to have a "hero" injured in a fender bender. I'm sure there are lots of people who are actual heros that we will hear nothing about because the press and politicians have decided to make her the poster boy.

You are right. I am sounding off. But you are wrong when you don't think many post on here think soldiers and the military is evil. They just say it differently (read moonbeam and his mastabutory flunkies).

The official army report into the incident, and the media reporting into it were pretty unambiguous:

Lynch was severely injured, it says, when her Humvee crashed into a 5-tonne US semi-trailer at high speed after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade while trying to escape an Iraqi ambush.

It does not mention that she was shot or stabbed. Here is the link to that report.

That's debateable. The staunch supporters of the administration would say the media did it to boost ratings. The staunch anti-war/bush crowd would say the White House leaked it/didn't refute it in order to drum up support for the war. I reckon the answer's probably somewhere in the middle.

Best sources claim that a Rupert Murdoch press writer made up the 'Initial Conflict' senario for FOX
to sensationalize on the event and polarize thier audience. FOX won't come clean on the details.

The claim was in the opening action with the roll-up to Baghdad, and she singlehandedly defeted
some overwhelming odds of Iraqi Army which was shooting her and stabbing her until she ran out
of ammo and had to surrender.
This was around the time that Ollie North was running around on TV wearing a gas mask yelling
"We've got Scuds coming in with nerve gas !" - which was staged as the missles were NOT scuds,
and had fallen in the dessert 1/2 hour before air time, and the alerts we over - it was a 'Hype',
artificial staged event for the benifit of FOX ratings - a sham.
I don't believe much on FOX, as the only thing they carry of merit is 'The Simpsons'.

I have nothing against our military personel. I served in the 60's and 70's. I am not opposed to war, though I was opposed to this one. I wish Lynch well, and am sure that she deserves the Purple Heart. But I have yet to hear any credible report of heroic or meritorious action on her part that would justify a Bronze Star. It would be interesting to read the recommendation that led to the award as it should include all of the heroic/meritorious actions that would qualify.

They should award the Iraqi doctors who saved her life

Oh wait, that might ruin our image of them being all terrorist American haters...
