Lunenburg man launches Pace Car program to tame traffic

CBC

A man from Lunenburg, N.S., has started a program in his community that enlists drivers to keep pace with the speed limit while driving through town.

Hans Dee launched the Pace Car driver program on Saturday outside of Lunenburg Academy School.

Under the plan, participants sign up and pledge to drive at or below the speed limit. Drivers are then given a yellow bumper sticker for their vehicles that identifies them as a Pace Car driver.

The designated drivers become "mobile speed bumps" as they drive throughout town.

Dee started the program because he was concerned for pedestrians' safety due to speeding vehicles on the main streets of Lunenburg.

"When there is a lot of traffic and especially fast traffic, you don't see pedestrians," Dee told CBC News on Sunday. "And if people don't see people on the streets, they think they can go fast. So I kind of hope this can break that cycle," he said.

So far, approximately 50 people in Lunenburg have signed a pledge to slow down.

According to a Nova Scotia website that promotes safe routes for schoolchildren, there are approximately 1,000 Pace Cars in the province.

Dee said the next step is to assemble a team to promote the program in Lunenburg.

I felt enraged just reading this article. I am glad I don't live in that community.

What a bunch of busy body good for nothing self righoust ass hole.

Where do I sign up? I just hope all of us pace cars can drive side by side to slow you speeders down.

Horrible idea, studies show that drivers like this have the side effect of causing the others to try harder to get around them. Thats actually worse for the pedestrians since the following driver is further distracted by these folks.

So is he trying to fix traffic or protect pedestrians? By forcing people to slow down you're going to royally fuck the traffic situation, but possibly make it safer for pedestrians.

However, these studies are utterly ignored. 🙁

this is horrible, there are now FOUR FUCKING POSTS ABOVE THE OP

fusetalk is shitting the bed and I hope it goes away forever

I think the pace car drivers should also be allowed to issue traffic citations for people who pass them.

They do this around here but to be extra safe they drive 10 under the speed limit at all times and they don't have the yellow bumper sticker.

The good part about this is you know which cars need to be keyed, no risk of accidentally damaging the incorrect vehicle that is just the same make and model. 😛

Woah there - as far as I can tell they're just driving their OWN cars at or below the speed limit, and advertising that they are doing so with a bumper sticker. They have every right to do that as long as they stay within the speeds required by law, and it doesn't make them self righoust ass holes [sic]. If they were actively trying to prevent people from passing them, you'd have a complaint.

Driving at the speed limit wouldn't necessarily have a negative impact on traffic, especially through a town where there are frequent intersections with lights.

Driving below the speed limit when road conditions don't require it is really unnecessary, and shouldn't be done.

why dont they just make speeding illegal and be done with it...

They should issue pieces of paper identifying the infraction and enforcing a monetary penalty of some sort... have it handed out by a law enforcement individual of some sort.

If only there was a way to do this, then we wouldn't be policed by citizens who think they know better.

I was in Dallas (IIRC... I was traveling a lot back then) a few years ago and saw a news story about how the police were implementing "rolling road blocks" on some of the worst freeways in the area.

They then showed video of cop cars driving (the speed limit) side by side in each lane of the freeway... traffic was backed up for miles.

I don't know if that was an experiment or if they still do that from time to time... I haven't been back there in a while.

I'd rather read a few posts out of order than listen to people like you bitch about shit that you can't fix, that doesn't matter, and is getting fixed anyway.

On topic, I don't see how this will make a difference at all. We all have speedometers. If people are willing to ignore the dial in the dashboard, what's to make anyone think they're going to do anything other than pass the slower traffic?
