Lulz, it appears most acceleration events in Toyotas were because of retardation

So for the record, here is what is confirmed about the cars, is this true?

1) Floor mat has potential to lock accelerator and has been confirmed as root cause in the famous Lexus accident that killed the family
2) Accelerator pedal can become "sticky", but has not been actually linked to any accidents unequivocally?

That floor mat was taken from a different model, so it didn't fit right in the first place. What if someone had taken the spare tire out and put that in the driver's footwell? Would they issue a recall for that as well?

And either way, shifting into neutral would have prevented that crash along with most of these other crashes, regardless of the extent of the problem.

I never knew it wasn't even a Toyota floor mat that caused that.

So despite this starting months ago is there a single case of unintended accident-causing acceleration that is clearly the failure of a Toyota car?

I believe it was a Lexus RX-series all-weather floor mat in an ES350 that caused the issue.

Toyota advised people to stop using the floor mats, issued a recall to make the accelerator pedal smaller and less likely to stick, and installed a software update that included a brake override (so if you hit the gas and the brakes at once it ignores the gas).

It was irresponsible to use the wrong floor mat, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people did it. Reuse the all-weather mats from one car in another one because of the cost. Seems like a cheap-ass thing to do, especially in a Lexus. But on the other hand, the other factors (a pedal that is apparently more prone to getting stuck and the lack of a brake override) also contributed to the crash.

I think the Lexus floor mat issue is actually totally separate from the Toyota sudden unintended acceleration issue. They just hit at about the same time, and since then there's been a tidal wave of reports, some legitimate, but many by people either too dumb to operate a car or who are looking to get some money from Toyota. The fact that even us car guys aren't totally sure of what happened is indicative of Toyota not being very forthcoming about it, so clearly they should take some blame regardless.

Toyota took a shotgun approach to the floor mat issue - they advised people to stop using the floor mats, issued a recall to make the accelerator pedal smaller and less likely to stick, and installed a software update that included a brake override (so if you hit the gas and the brakes at once it ignores the gas).

I took a shot gun approach and declined all the recalls when the dealership took my car into service. Refused the floor mat since it was just retarded. Refused the brake override since that's also retarded. My pedal was not recalled.

It was absolutely hilarious since everyone at the time was jamming the dealerships with service appointments for the recalls, and I was the one who went in and declined all of them.

It's all the more heartbreaking that a floor mat caused those folks to die.

It wasn't the guy's own car remember, so he had no idea about what floor mats were in it.

It was a dealer loaner that he was driving for the first time.

A dealer loaner that had already been reported for a sticking accelerator.

It seems unbelievable that an adult experienced driver could not recover from having the accelerator wedged down by the floor mat.

It had to be a combination of things.

Wrong floor mat for vehicle.
Easily faded brakes.
Unfamiliarity with the shifter.
Unfamiliarity with push button engine start/stop.
Panic.

You're TRD enhanced Camry goes full throttle everywhere anyway...so it shouldn't be a problem...am I right? ;)

Toyota Racing Development FTW! That reminds me, I meant to order some TRD badges off ebay for the Prius.

I can peal the TRD Off Road stickers off my truck and send them to you. Might look good for when you raise your Prius to throw on some 22" hoopties.
