Ah, i remember why i stopped consciously doing it. I was getting sleep paralysis instead of lucid dreaming.

this sounds like BS. When you wake up, wouldn't you forget it all? (if so, then how can you be sure that you have lucid dreams?)

You have no idea what you're talking about. You're AWAKE in your dreams. That's what lucid dreaming is, and you'll remember everything.

lol i have dreams like that sometimes, i'll turn to the people trying to kill me and i'll go for getting em all. anyone else able to kinda... rewind their dream and try again? like if i get shot or something i can rewind it and give it another shot. maybe i was playing some video game with too many extra lives or a savespot or something.

:( the best dreams for me are usually cut short of their ending for me ie: sex dreams or winning a trillion dollars and waking before i get any monies.... and it's almost always exactly when the good stuff should begin, and almost always the same time i always wake up.

but sometimes i just have weird weird dreams. I also notice that settings repeat, like the past few nights, my dreams have taken place around a sports equipment store. in my dream the layout was very detailed, yet i dont think ive been in that specific store from my dreams in my entire life.

hmm OP can we get a poll in here to see what % of people it happens to?

it happened a lot more often when i was younger... (18 now, if i can remember my dream then i could usually remember controlling myself in them. except i begin in weird random situations that my mind throws me into)

i think it happens more when you're already well rested.

Its really cool to be able to stop "falling" and begin flying, visualizing you are over a desired location, with certain other chosen companions. Or being able to turn around and fend off the nmonster chasing you.

All of the lucid dreams I've had have been centered around some kind of movement (flying, racing downhill on a snowboard, etc...). I thought I was weird because I've had them since I was a kid, but had never heard anyone else talk about it until a few years ago. I can't induce it (yet), happens about 2-3 times a year. I remember each episode vividly.

I've "flown" down the Lake Michigan shore all the way to Chicago. I swear that I was looking at shoreline that I'd never seen before (especially from the lakeside) but my brain was somehow able to fill it all in in great detail. I would go back to double check stuff, during the dream.

When I awake from an episode, I feel like a ninja pirate with laser-beams for eyes.

I skimmed through the WikiBook before sleeping in hopes of lucid dreaming. Here were my experiences last night:

Before going to sleep, I tried concentrating on one activity. That was driving a car.

What I got:

Dream 1: I needed surgery b/c there was a peice of metal stuck in my left pinky. The only way to get it out was too slice my palm open and try to dig it out with the surgeons own fingers. Doctors told me the anesthetic (sp?) may or MAY NOT work while they are operating.

Yeah... definetely not a fun dream. Next one wasn't so bad, but not what I wanted.

Dream 2: I was back in Highschool, and it was gym class. We were playing vollyball, and I was serving the ball like freakin Pro. Everyone was like, "Dayyyyyyyyuuum." Then I get a call from some random person - as I'm playing vollyball - telling me Galdalf isn't gonna be able to make it. I replied with, "Whatever, it's his own fault."

And that's all I remember. Dream 2 was kinda wierd because while I don't mind playing volleyball, I'd much rather play something else, and I thought LOTR was kinda a snooze fest. Whatever...gonna try for the car dream tonight, again.

Heh, I can almost guarantee a lucid dream when I fall asleep in surroundings that I'm not quite familiar with, coupled with a little discomfort (bed too short, hard, bad pillow, etc.) I used to fall asleep on the couch for this purpose.

According to the website that I linked, remembering your dreams is the first step toward building your lucid dreaming skills.
I didn't try to practice lucid dreaming yet, but am planning to do it soon. I usually remember my dreams, but as I said before, I rarely have control over them.
I envy those who can do it ;) I mean, imagine the possibilities :Q

Using a small tape recorder or pencil and paper to jot down dreams you awaken from. I find the tape better, so I dont have to turn light on and think about writing. easier to just mumble the facts then fade away to sleep again.
When you go back to sleep, focus on those elements.
Its not unusual to be able to "rejoin" or rewrite the same dream...
The possibilities are endless, and the experience truly remarkable.
What will really freak you though if someone you are close to, and sleep with nightly, does the same thing. It is rare, but does happen...
Is that like a simultaneous mutual hallucination?

I've done it.. I flew around and then woke up
In fact, last night I knew I was dreaming.. and I just let the nightmare roll on until I chose to wake up. I guess I was just curious..

Another thing, does anyone else find it impossible to read in your dreams? Whenever I do, it never makes any sense.

Poll choice: Yes, occasionally

Yeah I can read during my dreams, at least numbers. I remember once I had a dream that I was, well, a GTA game, except FF style with a "party" rather than just one person. I clearly remember being able to read the HUD and watch my $$$ soar through the roof as I turned everything and everyone I'd ever hated in my life into swiss cheese or a billion little pieces. That was the ONLY time I'd ever dreamt in the third person, kind of cool.

I don't know if my lucid dreams really count. Usually I have control but not over everything. In almost every one of my dreams I can fly around and think how I may think in real life. However, I can not simply switch from dreaming about playing videogames to dreaming about being a serial killer in the dark alleys of New York. The setting almost always stays the same.

EDIT: Lucid dreams are awesome. However, sometimes the movie-like ones are awesome as well. For example, I had a dream where we were watching a movie called Escape from Zombie Island. At first it was being watched normally but all of the sudden I was the main character. I feel the heat of the sun, hear the sound of rushing air, and see beautiful islands and oceans. However, I have no control whatsoever.

I got a hold of it when I was about 15 from Omni Magazine, and still do it from time to time. I still remember the first time it worked, it was @#$%ing incredible.
