I was looking for some modems to install in older Pentium 2's. Found these on p.watch.

Modem Link

$11 and free shipping and retail box.

I never ordered from this place and couldn't find any info on the boards. Anyhow, I thought it was a pretty good deal for these. Lucent is suppose to be the best winmodem and these even come in the retail box. Now I just need some cheap sound cards.

I've delt with that store a couple of times before, no probs except for a 6 week turn-around on a RMA. The modem is a good one and definitely is V.92.

I ordered a Lucent and an Intel a couple months ago for $24 shipped. They were fast and both worked with no problems. I wouldn'r hesitate to order from them again.

The product name says v.92, but the product description says v. 90. Are you sure these support v.92? (not that it matters that much---Juno, my cheap-ass ISP, will probably upgrade to v. 92 around the same time they perfect telepathic broadband access via implanted chips).

I have this exact modem, and I don't think it's v.92. The box I got it in said v.90, even though the guy on ebay stated it was 92 :| How can you tell if it's v.92? Doesn't it have call-waiting or something?

All the Lucent/Agere chips made after a certain date on these modems are V.92 if you use the latest drivers. There are specific markings to look for on the chip, but I don't remember what they are. Regardless, I got two of these modems a while back from this place, and as I said before, they are indeed V.92. The easiest way to tell if your modem is V.92 is the much faster handshake, which even works when connecting to a V.90 network.

V.92 is call waiting, but does it work with caller ID?

I mean the "call waiting ID" (caller ID while on phone when call comes).
I tried one of those "Emerson Switchboard"s and it did not work with the call waiting ID box we had although it was claimed to be "caller ID compatible". Now I got a "Catch-A-Call" sold from many sites like BB and Radio Shack, and it worked first time I installed it. Then it stopped ID'ing calls while online (later thatnight). Then calling our number with cell phone we got rings but the CAC didn't ring. I set the "sensitivity" jumper and it worked again. Briefly. Then it stopped ID'ing again. Jumper back to norm and no change.

So I am looking for another solution, and was eyeing a call waiting LUCENT/agere modem at orpheuscomputing, but that site is offline. I think they went belly up.

Anyway, I want Lucent chip (only good winmodem - got 3 - all work great), but if these V.92 modems don't work with caller ID as well as call waiting, it won't help me much. I did read some user reviews at sysopt that one guy said it does caller ID.

Anyone with any experience on the V.92's?

There is a program my friend uses, I don't remember the name, but it runs while you are online, and if you have call waiting and get an incoming call, it will allow the person to leave a message, and will notify you on your computer and play the message. It works with his old V.90 modem so I guess it's not dependent on the modem standard.

I heard that too. Don't remember details though.

I was just at Lucent site, and did a search for "modem", and came up with a .pdf doc on the V.92 standard.

http://www.lucent.com/livelink/090094038000efde_White_paper.pdf

This says caller ID will work if you have caller ID service. I already know that you must have the "call waiting ID" service with your phone company. Regular Caller ID only works when nobody is on the phone or online already.

What it doesn't say in the doc is if the ISP does not have V.92 yet, if in that case caller ID won't work.

I guess one could circumvent that by getting a call waiting modem, regardles of it being V.92. Actiontec had/has CW modems. I remember a hot deal Wally World had a year or so back, clearing out the Actiontec CW modem. That was a Lucent hard controller PCI card. Mwave still has them but at $55.

This one appears to be a better deal at Computergeeks

Sure it's a better deal if you don't consider shipping. However, Compugeeks is charging $6.00 for shipping, making the total $15.

I took a chance and ordered this modem. I received a Blitzz TelePipe model BFI303 (never heard of them). Works great and is a v.92 modem.

Interestingly, I went to the Blitzz website and found that they are having a promotion on this modem (as well as some other stuff). The promotion is a $20 rebate for the BFI303. Of course, I submitted the rebate. If it comes through, this will turn into a "make money" deal (nine dollars to be exact)!

Click here for the Blitzz site. Reabte looks to be good through October 31, 2002.

Of course, YMMV as to whether you get this same modem. The store selling it doesn't specify the modem in its ad.

Call Wave is the free program that runs while you are online and lets a caller leave a message which shows on your computer screen. You must subscribe to "call busy forwarding" from the phone company which varies in price from $1-3/month. There are several other programs that do the same, some even with a caller ID function which displays. Many of the other programs cost about $5/month for the service. Search Google for options.

I've used Callwave for the past two years and never had to pay for it, they sent me E-mails saying I was going to have to upgrade and pay for it and I ignored them all, they did a "forced" upgrade on me and now I see caller ID on there and no bill has ever arrived.

All in all I have been very happy with the service and keeps my total internet bill down to $10.95 a month (AT&T $4.95 plan that died and went to $10.95)

Did you read this:

*BFI303 mail-in rebate is only valid when you buy from Fry's Electronic, Staples, Micro Center, Best Buy, Circuit City, Future Shop, and Sam's Club.

My rebate form does not have this stipulation. They must have changed it since the time I printed it out. It looks like the "list of stores" condition is condition number 11 on the current rebate form. My (hard) copy of the form has only 10 conditions.

This may explain why their website would not show the rebate for a few hours yesterday. They must have been changing the form.

Looks like a dead rebate deal now. :(

The new rebate is better, man, because it goes the whole way up to 11. ;)

Just a reminder to everyone, these are WinModems, so if you're looking to use this in a non-windows machine, don't bother trying. :) I didn't see anything about this modem in the linmodems list.
