I would take a Lucent winmodem over a conexant any day of the week, if you have any doubts call your ISP's tech support line and ask what the worst modems are. I bet they answer Conexant/Rockwell/HSP/HCF ;)

I got my modems this week and installe one in a 98 system and one in an XP system. Both worked installed perfectly. Didn't even need the disk for XP. They are identified as Agere. Sorry, I didn't check the properties for definite confirmation of v.92, but the box says so.

I got one of these from iitem.com last month. It was not an Agere/Lucent modem. Iitem.com does not reply to my emails and they are very difficult to reach by phone. The modem I received has an Agere chip SV92P whereas the Agere/Lucent chip is marked DSP1648 (I have one already). When booting XP this modem is not detected as a Lucent either. I tried to install Lucent firmware with no success. Using the supplied CD I did get it to work and it does support V.92. Proper handshake and all. Tested for bandwidth and found it is not as good as the Lucent chip modem. I will not buy from iitem.com again.

LINUX users - there are drivers for your OS and the Lucent Winmodem. My real Agere/Lucent Winmodem came with a CD that had firmware for Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, 4.0, ME, XP, and LINUX.

The spec says it is Data\Fax\Voice. I don't see any audio jacks in the picture. Is it simple to record audio from this modem? My mom leaves messages for the kids on our answering machine. Right now I'm using an ISA voice modem to record from. Next upgrade is pretty sure to not have an ISA; so it would be great if I could record from the voicemail using this modem.

TIA for the info.

Yep :) (I'm an ISP support tech) THE WORST modems are Motorola SM56 and PCTel chipset modems. Conextant modems at least can be worked with, but they're not all that great. Intel modems aren't very good either----they work great as long as you have perfect line conditions. They have like ZERO error correction, so if you live in a rural area, apartment building, or a subdivision, forget about it.

Lucent and USR are widely considered the best Winmodems available. Lucent modems can get some incredible compression speeds going (we had one download a 1 meg web page consisting of the letter A at 1236kbps....almost as fast as a T1!).
