Loud Music Can Cause Lung Collapse

Loud Music Can Cause Lung Collapse
By Amy Norton, Reuters

NEW YORK (Sept. 2) - Blasting music can be hard on the ears and the neighbors, and now researchers say it can also pack enough punch to collapse a lung.

Reporting in the medical journal Thorax, they describe the cases of four young men who suffered a lung collapse -- technically called pneumothorax --that appeared to be triggered by loud music. Three of the men were at a concert or club when the pneumothorax occurred, while the fourth was in his car, which was outfitted with a 1,000-watt bass box because he "liked to listen to loud music."

A pneumothorax occurs when a small rupture in one of the lungs allows air to leak into the space between the lungs and the chest wall, causing the lung to collapse. Symptoms include breathlessness and chest pain on the affected side.

A small, partial collapse may resolve on its own, but more severe cases may require the insertion of a chest tube to allow the air to escape the chest cavity.

Often, an underlying lung disease or chest injury is the culprit in pneumothorax. But so-called primary spontaneous pneumothorax happens in the absence of an underlying disease, typically striking tall, thin, male smokers.

The cases described in the Thorax report suggest that loud music may be one cause of this type of pneumothorax. Though the report cites only a small number of patients, lead author Dr. Marc Noppen told Reuters Health he suspects more cases of music-induced pneumothorax will now be caught.

Since the report's publication, he said, doctors in a few countries have told him they've seen similar cases. If more doctors routinely ask pneumothorax patients about their exposure to loud music, the number of injuries attributed to blasting tunes will likely go up, noted Noppen, who is with the Academic Hospital in Brussels, Belgium.

In two of the cases his team describes, the men were standing close to large loudspeakers when they suddenly felt chest pain.

A third case involved a 23-year-old smoker who had suffered several episodes of pneumothorax. During a follow-up medical visit, the doctors mentioned having seen two music-related pneumothorax cases, and the patient suddenly remembered that two of his attacks happened at heavy metal concerts.

Noppen said he and his colleagues suspect that loud music may damage the lungs due to its booming bass frequency, which can be felt as a vibration going through the body. The lungs may essentially start to vibrate in the same frequency as the bass, which could cause a lung to rupture.

It's probably a good idea, according to Noppen, to stand back from the speakers at concerts and clubs and to ease up on that car-stereo bass. It might also save your hearing, he added.

Anybody with a 1000 watt bass box deserves a lung collapse for being inconsiderable mothatfvckers. Nodody wants to hear your "vibe" 1 mile down the road.

I want the government to go into the business of distributing sound systems. 😛

No, seriously. I don't think anything needs to be "done" by any government or organization. Individuals, on the other hand should probably take notice.

And really, it's just kinda freaky news of interest. A WTF??? item.

With a car stereo that loud, I shouldn't have a problem pulling my car next to his and putting a .22 round through his empty skull, no silencer required. 😛

I'm sorry, but I looooooove my sh!t bumpin. It has nothing to do with other people, it's about how you like to hear your ish. I hated hearing about the lung clapse thing cause it'll prolly happen to me someday.

Ok, I was worried that you wanted a restriction on selling these. A WTF item is ok then. Go on with your daily lives.

It scares me that some people enjoy annoying others.

those of you who are pissed about us with 1Kw speakers stfu. Not everyone who listens to them is an inconcederate asshole. I for one had 1Kw in my car, however i was considerate enough to keep it at moderate volumes.

However my next system i plan on putting two 15's IB in the back with about 1Kw of power. and then about a 400 watt front system w/ mids and tweets. Probably all on an active cross over with a decent headunit. but i will still be considerate ,and now not only will you hear boom boom, you will hear the whole song clearly so HAHA, but ill be considerate cuz i find the ppl who just go boom assholes too.

You know, I haven't seen many IBs in a car install before, would you mind PMing some examples? that would be one hell of a system, if it performs as it does in a typical home install...

Interesting. I would think an eardrum would blow first. I didn't think a car system could go low enough to pressurize the air enough to collapse a lung and not blow an eardrum. I'm guessing that guy probably had some defect in his lungs.

I annoy the select few that I wouldn't associate with anyway. And you sir, are definately the latter.

Collapsed lung would be the least of your worries if you pull that sh|t around here. Your biggest concern would be dislodging your import, ricer, weiniemobile from your ass! I've confronted 3 of these fvcktards, and they ALL apologized and turned the cRap OFF. Bunch of fvcking inconsiderate, pissant, pussies... :|

Man those suck.

When i was in high school I suffered 4 spontaneous collapses. i had the chest tub 3 times. MAN THEY SUCK.

that was one of the most painful experiences i have ever had.

anyway. people who have those bass systems loud enough that i can hear it while INSIDE my house deserve anything they get.

I've experienced something similar I think.

Installed a serious two 10" pro woofers with 2000 watts of power.

the bass was so strong that you wanted to immediately leave the car. It HURT and honestly made me feel like I couldn't breathe. Within a minute of listening we felt nausous.
