The North didn't give up because America was defeating itself at home. It was on the news, no big secret there. Only Americans can defeat America, Ho used to say.

Well it's their generation that is going to be headed for the killing fields. Maybe that want a say in it.
Fortunately the art or war has evolved beyond killing fields (for the US at least). Desert Storm 2 will be another military-tech demo.
thats probably right, that is untill the troops enter cities, thats when high tech doesnt matter (at least what some US general said in some interevew on the news)

And why do they have to enter the cities? Surround it for 2-3 weeks with constant shelling, and even the Russian somewhat pull back from the Germans onslaught, as well as sustaining heavy casualties. I imagine we have much better artilery and firepower than at that time.
2-3 weeks of bombing a civilian city, sure that will be okey for everyone:disgust:

I don't recall anyone crying over US bombing campaign over Germany & France for months (and they do hit civilian target as well) . Why should Iraq be any difference ?

Didn't some genious predicted that we would had suffered 20K casualties removing the Iraqi from Kuwait? They were at it again in Afghanistan, impossible to defeat the Taliban. Fight to the death? Sure the Taliban is still kicking, but Americans come home in body bags like the Russians never came true. The Talibans didn't fight to the death, neither did the Iraqis. These people will always have their voices and listeners saying how tough the Republican Guards are.

Bomb Baghdad to rubble, not really neccessary. Who controls the water supply win the city, not too many place where you can get drinkable water over there. I'm sure the army engineers of uncle sam can do something about that (specifically the Tigris and the Euphrates).

Yeah right. Americans realized that Vietnam wasn't worth dieing for. Hell we couldn't even tell who the enemy was over there. We weren't only fighting the NVA we were fight the South Vietnamese Viet Cong too.

"...you must never forget the sacrifice and courage that thousands of Americans have made to build our nation and promote freedom around the world. You must remember our duty, our honor, and our country."
John McCain

Freedom isn't free
I for one would hate to see any American service-member lose their life in any conflict. But, sometimes a country just must fight. Fight to preserve what they have come to know as their "way of life". It is my opinion that we should kick some butt now to show that terrorism will not be tolerated. When you punch the bully back, he tends to move on to weaker people. It's time to punch back.
I was in the service and I am old enough to remember Vietnam. Service-members also know that they might have to fight. They know this going into the military and most of them accept it. Nobody wants anybody to die but sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do. The colonists here had a vastly inferior military compared to the British. They knew somebody was going to die, maybe even themselves. But that didn't stop them and as a result of that sacrifice and many others over this countries history, the USA is a pretty good place to live. Lets not let some back-world wackos change that.

Interesting atricle considering it come from an American University.

Nothing much.....just keeping you safe. Don't worry though because better men than yourself, and most of us here, will go into danger to insure our safety and freedoms. Thank God for them and the job they do.

I hope you feel really proud and justified when you're lying dead in a coffin with your flag draped over it. People will miss you, maybe your kids, maybe your parents, but we'll be no freer as a result. Your government did a good job imbedding grandiose delusions into your skull, you are no martyr, and you are no better than Osama's jihad fighters. You're both slaves to your ideology. You wouldn't know what freedom is if it you slept with it.
Some people are raised on GI-JOE and they never grow out of it.
Me? I'll take my freedom any way I can get it, not dictated to me by my government, my flag, or you.
Sorry but you're dead wrong. Like it or not, you have your freedom because of people like him. As far as the comparision between the US military and Osama's jihad fighters, you're kidding right? Show me the last US soldier to deliberately blow himself up in a restaurant filled with innocent victims.

Your lack of respect and appreciation for veterans sickens me and I'm not a vet...

And him who hasn?t had a good shave in a while, or even more seen his wife and kids. But he accepts that, because it?s his job.

I would like to see these protesters trying to protest in a place like Afghanistan, or Iraq. I would hate see what they would do to these protesters face to face if giving the chance.

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington, D.C.

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Thank you for your recent letter roundly criticizing our treatment of the Taliban and Al Qaeda detainees currently being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

My administration takes these matters seriously, and your opinion was heard loud and clear here in Washington. You'll be pleased to learn that, thanks to the concerns of citizens like you, we are creating a new division of the Terrorist Retraining Program, to be called the "Liberals accept Responsibility for Killers" program, or LARK for short.

In accordance with the guidelines of this new program, we have decided to place one terrorist under your personal care. Your personal detainee has been selected and scheduled for transportation under heavily armed guard to your residence next Monday. Ali Mohammed Ahmed bin Mahmud (you can just call him Ahmed) is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of admonishment.

It will likely be necessary for you to hire some assistant caretakers. We will conduct weekly inspections to ensure that your standards of care for Ahmed are commensurate with those you so strongly recommended in your letter. He generally bathes quarterly with the change of seasons, assuming that it rains, and he washes his clothes simultaneously. This should help with your water bill. Also, your new friend has a really bad case of body lice that hasn't been completely remedied. Please heed the large orange notice attached to your detainee's cage: "Does not play well with others." Although Ahmed is sociopathic and extremely violent, we hope that your sensitivity to what you described as his "attitudinal problem" will help him overcome these character flaws. Perhaps you are correct in describing these problems as mere cultural differences.

He will bite you, given the chance, but his rabies test came back negative so not to worry. We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home schooling. Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We do not suggest that you ask him to demonstrate these skills at your next yoga group.

He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless (in your opinion) this might offend him. Ahmed will not wish to interact with your wife or daughters (except sexually) since he views females as a subhuman form of property. However, he will be eager to assist with the education of your sons; have available for their use several copies of the Q'uran.

Oh - and rest assured he absolutely loves animals, especially cats and dogs. He prefers them roasted, but raw is fine, too, if they aren't more than 2 or 3 days dead.

Thanks again for your letter. We truly appreciate it when folks like you, who know so much, keep us informed of the proper way to do our job. We think this watching over each other's shoulder is such a good way for people to interact that we will be sending a team of federal officials with expertise in your line of work to your place of business soon, just to help you do your job better. Don't be concerned that they have the power to close your business, seize your property, and arrest you for any violation of the 4,850,206 laws, codes, regulations and rules that apply to your profession.

They're really there just to make sure you're doing everything the proper way. That is what you wanted, right?

Well, thank you for this opportunity to interact with such a valued member of the citizenry. You take good care of Ahmed - and remember...we'll be watching!

Well, I read all of the insulting going on in this thread, and decided not to comment on all of it. Instead, I'll just post my thoughts =).

First off, I guess I can respect all of the hippies in CA that don't want a war. After all, everyone is entitled to his/her opinions. But, I don't see how you all can ignore the real threat that Iraq is and probably will continue to be if we do not act. Even if there was a draft, I would have no problem fighting for my country while all of you sat on your asses. At least I would be doing something.

I see a lot of those signs in the pictures trying to make statements to Bush... however, even if he decided not to fight a war, he still wouldn't get your vote in the next election because all you people do is elect democrats over there...

when you see people protest right on wilshire blvd, right off the 405 freeway on ramp, and they clog up traffic and it gets backedup, you dont care about their cause. you just wanna take your car on the sidewalk and start running people over.

i hate it every time they protest. i actually rolled down my window and yelled no one gives a .... before.
