Zeppelin had many musical style influences, the most heavy being the blues, eastern/Indian and country. I wouldn't categorize them as "Heavy Metal," although it seems many music catalogues seem to like doing that because it's the easy way out. In reality, Led Zeppelin is undefinable with a simple "blues" or "heavy metal" label.

Well said! But essentially the roots of most majority of their songs are 12 bar derivatives of some sort.
Page got really interested in Indian scales and it obviously worked out really well.

while thats true, the term "heavy metal" was originally used to describe them.
