Ramble On, a song from Zeppelin II, contains the following lyrics:

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah.

I never noticed that before. Coincidence, do you think? Zeppelin II was released October 22, 1969. Was the LOTR trilogy started or completed by that time? Did Led Zeppelin sing about the book, or did Tolkien (sp?) get his ideas from this song?

The books came out in the 1950s. Zeppelin was refrencing the book.

Yeah, the books were based on a few lines from a Zep song.

Didn't you know that? n00b.

Isn't the next movie going to be called Stairway to Heaven? Or maybe it's Houses of the Holy. I can't remember...

well this part isn't in the movies, but the second half of the two towers is titled "fool in the rain"

and of course 'mordor' is just a changed form or kashmir.

LOL!

Alice in Wonderland was based on a Jefferson Airplane song too.

It's fun being old, I remember all this. There are a lot of LOTR references, the other 2 LOTR songs are Battle On and Over the Hills And Far Away. And, Robert Plant had a dog named Strider.

These guys dressed like they were from the book, they could have been movie extras just the way they were.

I thought it was "Ramble On"? Wouldn't be the first time I've heard wrong though.

It is Ramble On.

JShaker, you should check out "The Song Remains The Same" on DVD.

I wouldn't strictly call them a blues band.

While a lot of their songs were blues influenced, they weren't all blues.

The Yardbirds were clearly blues.
Led Zeppelin's first album is clearly blues.
Then they shift towards heavy metal.

I think Over the Hills and Far Away was LOTR influenced... open road and all that. It would make Bilbo happy.
