Looks like PC gaming will survive after all

Yeah, I know, a cracked article...

But I feel like they have a good point. The 360 and PS3 look like they're going to fall prey to the same soul-sucking "casual" (a.k.a. It's okay to make a terrible game because it's fun for the whole family!...and because it makes millions!) gaming that destroyed any chance of innovative gameplay on the Wii.

Seriously, look at the Kinect launch lineup:

If 360 and PS3 go down this path, PC will be the last sanctuary for "hardcore" gamers...unless they make an extra-special Kinect for GFWL!

Really why can't consoles have both? It's not like microsoft and sony are brushing aside traditional developers to make room for the new casual devs -- rather, they're simply expanding their markets.

You might end up seeing more marketing not oriented towards hardcore gamers.. but that doesn't change the fact that traditional games have been the money makers up to this point -- and since they do bring in money, they'll still be made.

PC gaming will eventually decline into MMO and RTS games with everything else being console ports or simultaneous release, although that's basically how it is now

PC gaming has never been in jeopardy. PC sales have remained very strong year on year, and we're seeing more great titles than ever before.

Yup, most of the negative figures you see on the net do not include downloaded content, which valve claims has now surpassed B&M sales.

It is written like a parody article but if you read it closely you realize that it's actually not a parody at all. I wholeheartedly agree with the entire thing. Sony and Microsoft seem to have decided to follow Nintendo's lead of not having games for their "game" systems.

It doesn't change the fact that the age of the PC exclusive is dead.

The last major PC exclusive Crysis, and that was in 2007. Since then there has been nothing.

The best selling games on steam are consistently Modern Warfare 2 and Bad Company 2, both console ports, one much more so than the other.

This has already happened as you said.

PC gaming will move toward holograms and stuff like that. 3D TV and movies are a joke. Instead of wearing glasses to assemble an image holograms will make it seem live in real space.

Starcraft 2? (to name one coming out in just over a month). 😛

Yep, its a shame to have to use a 360 controller for some games because kb+m is just a nightmare but at least theyre still released for the pc, thats a plus i suppose.

The entire premise behind the article is that console gaming is in decline- to prove this point they link to an article showing software sales on the rise.....

This may seem strange, but the PS3 and 360 actually have a whole bunch of games that come out on their platforms each week. They chould have half of them be dedicated casual shovelware and still be coming out with more core titles then the PC is atm. Honestly to me it seems that the casual market is working its' way down to the portable level which is where it seems most natural. RTS/MMOs are going to have a fairly safe haven on the PC for the forseeable future with most of the rest of the core games being most popular on the consoles.

PC gaming will move toward holograms and stuff like that.

You think any new display technology is going to come out and not be pushed into the living room? Let's see, go after the relatively miniscule PC gaming market or everyone who has a TV; not exactly a tough choice there- that goes way beyond gaming platforms- a general purpose "TV" is still going to destroy every gaming platform combined when it comes to market penetration and revenue generation for quite some time.

That's pretty much the norm when ever consoles are mentioned in the PC forums.

Personally, I just go where the games are. PC & Consoles both co-exist in my household... holding hands under the stars... or something. :awe:

It's pretty obvious the PC market has declined into pretty much only MMO, RTS, and FPS games (all three of which do not translate well to consoles, just by sheer practicality and useability issues). Everything else is easier done on consoles... some would argue even FPS, too, but most serious FPS gamers would disagree.

Don't forget the round based Strategy games! Can't wait for Civ5... 🙂

I don't think the age of the PC exclusive is dead. In 2009 there were only 12 PS3 exclusives released and 11 XBOX 360 exclusives released. This very long list shows dozens of PC exclusives released in 2009. Sims 3, Empire: Total War, Dawn of War 2, Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment, etc. are some big titles.

I think MMO, RTS, TBS, and a handful of other games will always be PC exclusives. Couple that with FPS and other games that play much better on the PC IMO, and I don't think we'll ever see PC gaming die even though it seems that we have weekly topics on the subject.

I suppose that's true about exclusives, but unfortunately I'm not one of those people who really enjoys RTSs...never really have been able to get into them.

Since FPS has always been a genre that (at least I feel) is most at home on the PC, I mourn the loss of the FPS exclusives...or at least decent ports.

On the other hand, in previous years, I'm not sure that PC gamers would have gotten stuff like Assassin's Creed, so I guess we can be thankful for that.

I really don't understand the hate for games that are not PC exclusive. Who cares if console gamers get to play them as well? Sure, you have those bad ports, but aren't there more PC exclusives over the years that suffer far worse problems than this perceived "consolitis"?

People bitch about the stupid things. Example: Mass Effect and ME2 were great games. I played it on PC and had no problems with the menus. 10 years ago, if such a game were released, people wouldn't have batted an eye at "consolitis".

PC gamers, just get over it already. Nobody cares that you think you're better than console players. If you actually think you are, let me ask you this: How's Assassin Creed 2?

Well, just look at NWN (Neverwinter Nights). Old game (2002), still going strong, vibrant mediaevil fantasy roleplay communities still exist online.

The hardcore gamers have been on the PC since the days of Doom. I don't know why you'd think otherwise. PC has the most competitive games ever released short of the fighting games genre (thankfully we did get SF4!) However, games like Quake, Counter-Strike, and Starcraft defined a generation of competitive gaming.
