I think the point he was making was that there is nothing to know about shelves. You buy them to fit whatever you're putting in them.

If you're as hard up for money as it sounds like you are - I'd peruse craigslist for something that is free - people toss shelves away all the time. If that doesn't satisfy you, you can get a hammer, a saw and some nails (for probably less than $10 total) and build one out of scrap or free wood you can find. Spice it up with some paint, which you could also probably find for free.
