addr - Thanks so much. You're post just helped firm my belief that a 15 inch powerbook and OSX is right for me. I'm going to go to the Apple Store soon, not to order, but just to fool around for a bit and make sure it's ok. I know there is a learning curve, but I still want to play and see.

NakaNaka,

Just be prepared to fall *hard* for your system. I recently had exactly the same experience as addragyn, honestly, nearly word-for-word.

I had completely burned out on the building (hey, my two kids had overclocked celeron 300As way back when....) and the seemingly endless upkeep on my Win boxes. Computers just felt like any other tool.

A Powerbook and OSX will be a joy to use (typing this on my 12" PB right now), after almost 6 months I'd still rather use my PB more than any of my other machines.

Be sure to fiddle with the UNIX underpinnings. My husband will be taking over my 12" PB when my 17" arrives today :D, he's a pure UNIX guy and basically plans to ignore the GUI. Talk about a flexible system.

Enjoy,

JT

Hehe. I would like to fall for a computer again; it's been too long.

P.S. do you use external keyboard or mouse with your PB when you are at home?

So guys. I'm going to be using this for the web, im's, and stuff like that but even though I don't use complex programs: I push my computer. I like to have several programs running at once and hate slowdowns. I don't often use programs such as photoshop or anything like that but I like to play plenty of videos on here and will watch a lot of DVD's. Right now, I'm running XP with a P3 1.3ghz and 256 megs of ram and while this thing is pretty good, I def get slowdowns sometimes.

>How much better is the 1.5Ghz over the 1.33?
On the 1.33 - is 5400RPM much better than 4200?
How well does 512 of RAM work? Is the 1Gig worth it?
How long does the battery last while just surfing the net? how about watching a movie?
What's the best way to get my files from the PC (w. out a cd burner) to the new mac? USB/USB transfer cable?

Also - this computer is for college, so I would like to still be using this thing in 3 years. Thanks

-Phil

Well this is dumb. I configured 2 computers, a 15 inch 1.33 and a 15 inch 1.5 .. The difference is almost non-existant.

? 1.33GHz PowerPC G4 with 64MB Graphics Memory
? 512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 2x256 SO-DIMMs
? 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
? Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
? Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
? AirPort Extreme Card
? Rechargeable Battery - 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook G4
? 15.2-inch TFT Display

Subtotal $2,422.00

? 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 with 64MB Graphics Memory
? 512MB DDR333 SDRAM - 2x256 SO-DIMMs
? 80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
? Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
? Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
? AirPort Extreme Card
? Rechargeable Battery - 15-inch Aluminum PowerBook G4
? 15.2-inch TFT Display

Subtotal $2,478.00

They do that intentionally. :)

If you're gonna go top end and get the 1.5, spend the $50 and bump the VRAM to 128MB.

A faster HD is always worth it in a laptop. With the upgrade being just $50 it's a no-brainer.

Get the minimum RAM config from Apple or get the minimum that uses 1 DIMM. Buy an upgrade from OWC.

Two things you can do to up battery life. Kill WiFi is you're not using it and run the screen at less than full brightness. I get four hours (appx.) on a 1GHz TiBook using wireless. I use SuperCal and the when done the screen is much better at any brightness.

You can just plug a network cable in between your Mac and PC. The Mac will automatically do a cross-over. Otherwise an iPod, or any external HD works great. Apple has a rudimentary guide.

If you're very price sensitive checkout the previous models and refurbs in the special deals section.
PowerBook G4 15" TFT
PowerBook G4 1GHz/256MB/60GB/Combo/GigE/15"TFT-Aluminum $1,799.00

PowerBook G4 1.25GHz/512MB/80GB/SuperDrive/AP Extreme Card/GigE/15"TFT-Aluminum $2,299.00

Refurbished PowerBook G4 15" TFT
PowerBook G4 1GHz/512MB/60GB/SuperDrive/GigE/56K/AirPort Card/Titanium/15"TFT - Refurbished $1,699.00

PowerBook G4 1GHz/256MB/60GB/Combo/GigE/Aluminum/15"TFT - Refurbished $1,499.00

How much of a performance difference is the VRAM at 128?

Also - I've never owned a laptop .. How hard is it to install RAM yourself? With a desktop, I've done it no problem, piece of cake, but I don't know if its hard with a laptop.

Thanks for the tips.

Not hard at all. You will need a size 00 Philips screwdriver though.

Ok, it came in and I must say it is a very pretty laptop. Not much to do on here until I get the design suite in. I'll put a review and pics and all that up soon.

Cass - So how's it coming?

Everyone else - any more thoughts on the powerbook? I seriously think I will be getting mine in the next month. I'm gonna go down to the Apple Store to check it out and play around with it before ordering online w. an edu discount.

I just came across this post and wished I had done so earlier...

Any first time apple buyer (esp. students) should sign up as a student developer. It's a one year $100 subscription that gets you a ~20% discount or so on one apple computer (desktop or laptop) + accessories per yer.... do a search on apple for ADC to find it. You get discs of each OS update under the pretense that you'll beta test for them. It's a pretty good deal overall...

The purchase of products at that discount is a "once in a lifetime" deal. After that, I believe you can only receive the advantages of software updates or previews. If at any point a student developer opts to update to their full level membership discounts, then the discounts occur on a yearly basis.

Wait until early July. If there is a product announcement or a speed increase (quite possible) it should be announced at MacWorld New York.

Apple may not revamp the line of Powerbooks but may introduce faster models.

Just played around with the 15 inch powerbook at the Apple store. Pretty f'in sweet. I kept hitting the mouse while I typed, but I think thats more of a laptop thing than an Apple think. I am 99% sure I'm getting one.

Lol, just buy the damn thing already.

I'm still adjusting to OS X (took me forever to figure out how to uninstall a program), but overall I like it. Honestly, I think I still prefer Windows over OS X, but that is just because I'm used to how Windows is set up. iTunes is nice and all, but I miss Winamp.

I ordered the Adobe Creative Suite for $375 the other day so that should be coming in shortly. I hated to spend that much money right after getting this laptop (and a new scanner and a $400 wide format printer are waiting for me in the not to distant future :(), but considering I'm getting Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Go Live, and Acrobat it's not too bad.

Does anyone know of any benchmarking programs for macs? And also, WHERE THE HELL DO I GO TO FIND MAC GAMES? I really don't feal like ordering them, are there any b&m stores that sell mac games? The only one I have is my brothers Warcraft 3 game just because it works with both PC's and Mac's, except the problem there is I think Warcraft 3 sucks. :)
