Probably mostly relax maybe work on stuff around the house. Been off all week so forgot it even is labour day. I still don't know when I start back work since my schedule ended on Saturday and I've been off so never got the new schedule. I should probably find out when I start lol.

You're in coding right? Yeah, fuck that man. Look around some, that's nuts to be working those hours on a weekend on salary.

i've thought about brushing up on leetcode and applying at some silicon valley companies for the heck of it

even if i still had to work that long, earning 2x of my current pay would make it feel a little better

Pretax twice, after tax only 50% more. Fuck that.

Working more than an average of 40h weeks is just stupid. You're just a number to the company, they don't care how much work you put in. Only put in the minimum, especially if OT is not paid. They will never give you anything more or do anything for you other than what is legally required.

they care that the project gets done on time.

and project deadlines are set in stone. whatever it takes to meet the deadlines is what i have to do - they are never moved back.

if work gets too far behind then OT becomes mandatory. and people who can't keep up get fired.

it pays well but it's stressful. i usually have to work 60 hour weeks for a few months at the end of the year.

i plan to put it up with it for 5 or 10 more years and then get out for good. hopefully closer to 5 than 10.

Sounds like they are setting unrealistic deadlines then, not that it's surprising lot of companies do that. Time to think of a different job. Life is too short to put up with spending it at work stressing out.

I have a list of "honey do's" that I was going to work on...but it's scheduled to rain again, (raining now) so most of that list will remain untouched... 😛

ATOT blog incoming:

The kids had a blast. I was pretty miserable because you're just waiting in line for kiddie rides... with kids. But Sesame Place is half made of water parks. Once I got changed and went on the lazy river tubing, it was quite nice. I was holding onto my little buddy boy while my older gal (4) and wifie had their own tubes. Man that was nice... spread out in a donut float and just letting the current take you and spin around. I wish I had one of those vacation drinks served in a carved out pineapple or coconut.

They're knocked out. Success! I'm enjoying a nice drink at my home office with BT headsets.

At least get some Chimay Blue.

It pains me to buy it here since its so much more expensive than the other side of the pond. Besides my friend is really into craft beers so he's trading some Dragon's Milk triple mash for...well I forget what but he generally gets very good stuff. To the point I rarely go to beer stores - I just go shopping at his house

Would have to respectfully disagree here. At least with how it was for me in accounting firms - Moving up you have to at least act like you're working hard and be seen working hard - and have other people tell the bosses you're working hard. This typically requires working long hours, because leaving at 5 is just uncommon as hell in the field.

Unlike industry jobs - in accounting firms you can move up in rank at any time. You don't have to wait for someone in the higher position to leave/die first.

Also similar to what brian said below, we are on projects for clients - If you piss off a client - you're going to have a bad time. If you don't finish something in time for the client, you're going to have a bad time.

Clients are just like assholes in retail stores - They are just like "FUCKING MAKE IT HAPPEN!" - with no real understanding that we are humans too that want to spend time with family and not working.

Hopefully sleeping in. Don't have on-call this weekend, thankfully, but I'm guessing we'll (us three developers at work) still get pinged for help with system errors. Ugh. At least now I'm on month to month for rent so when I get a new job I can gtfo.

Playing a bit of games. Got a new one, Ancestors Humankind Odyssey, but I have no clue wtf I'm doing in it. Need to watch some YT videos on it lol.

That's about it. Maybe I'll hit up the gun range. My brother or friend never want to go so I always gotta go myself which kinda sucks.

I always preferred shooting alone...fewer distractions.

I'm playing Obi-Wayne Kenobi with my chainsaw-on-a-stick and making a landfill run.
I went to the landfill this morning and was unloading the trailer when a guy pulls in beside me in a little truck that is stacked up like the Clampetts' truck. He starts unloading the household crap. He shoves a large cardboard box off the truck and it breaks open to show that it is packed with 70s vintage porn magazines (70s as in 1970s, not 70s as in BoomerD, an important distinction). The guy starts laughing, poking through the stash. He said the collection belonged to his father, whose house he was cleaning out. He kept one magazine from the box and departed. I suspect he was going to give his father shit. Anyway, I'm still unloading my trailer when a group of construction workers pull in to dump demo waste. One of the workers notices the box of porno mags and paws through it a bit, takes a mag back to show the other guys. A couple of them pull out magazines then toss them back in the pile. I guess it occurred to them that bringing home girly magazines wasn't going to work out for them. I really wish there had been a way to set up a webcam to watch the box of magazines for the day.

tl;dr = porn is mentioned, go back and read the post.

Only people who chase around corporate ladders care about "ranks". It's all a game that ends up taking over your life and causing stress. Show up to your job, do the job for the time you're being paid for, get paid, and go home. Don't do more, and don't do less. A job is just to pay the bills and is an unfortunate necessity in the way the system works but don't let your life revolve around it. OT is not a bad thing but only if it's actually paid. I jump on all opportunities for OT or callouts, but I get paid for it. If you don't get paid for OT, don't work it. As for client projects it's your management's job to set decent deadlines and manage resources properly. If they keep setting deadlines that get blown it's not on you or at least it shouldn't be.

The more unpaid OT you work the more projects they'll dump on you as well. It's a vicious cycle. Companies play games to try to justify having as little employees as possible, if you work too efficiently they just stop replacing employees who leave or even lay off people. You of course still need to do your job and not actually purposely work less hard, but don't work harder than is normal and don't work more hours unless you get compensated for it. Lot of people fall in this corporate trap and it takes over their lives.

Meh, my sufferring for ~6 years in accounting firms is what got me about all the competition to get the cushy job I have today... that pays FAR more than I need and that I will be happy doing for the rest of my life.

I can't necessarily say that If I didn't suffer through accounting firms that I would be able to have such a cushy job now. Suffer during my younger years to benefit when I'm older.

we were going to camp on our beach lot near Boomer's place, but they asked me to work. I was lined up to get a 4 day weekend.
Just as well, it is raining out there according to ATOT. 😀
