Has anyone seen Untamo lurking around any of the forums lately.

 

I think he was banned a long time ago.

Yeah, I know he's been banned here. Wondering if he's been seen around any where else. He's posted at Ars as recently as November. Hasn't answered e-mail to the address he has listed in his profile there. And yes, his store is no more also.

Let me know what you think....Back about 8 months ago I bought a Geforce 2 GTS from Untamo. I had dealt with him several times before this w/o any problems. He was selling these OEM cards from his site with a one year warranty. Well, the card just went out on me so I contacted him regarding the warranty. After swapping e-mails he finally told me that his supplier will not honor the warranty so there is nothing he can do. He will "help me any way he can" short of replacing the card out of his own pocket.

Now, I know Untamo has since been banned from AT and has been accused of being a Troll around some of the forums. But I really need to get this card replaced and I think it's his responsibility. He's basically ingnoring me now. If I don't hear from him soon I'm gonna file a small claims action against him. This really irritates me. And to think I even defended the guy when he was having problems around here. What would you guys do?

I stand by Untamo as being a man of his word. If he said that he would help you out of his own pocket, then he will. His warantee wasn't from him -it was through his supplier. Don't expect him to take on the responsibility of the company that is making the poor decision.

He's not a troll and isn't considered one here. He was banned for wholesale (using AT as a business). That's against the rules here, and he knew it. Going against the rules got him banned, and he wasn't considered a troll because of it. He's a good guy, and a good business man. ...just doesn't belong here doing that.

If the manufacturer will not honor the warranty there is not much you can do.
Do you have a contract with Andrew? Any written proof that the card is his responsibility for a year?
Was he ever an established and licensed dealer?

Reselling of the card does void the warrant on it.

untamo i remember backed his cards here. i think he got banned because of a similar warantee type incident or something about somehitn getting shipped really really wrong.

i think that made the mods questions his being a business on anands.


i used to sell a lot of stuff on anands, at one point i sold something like 70 geforce and tnt2 pro cards from asus here. All i would do is back them with a no DOA and if it dies on you , i'll do what i can warranty. basically thats what untamo did. Its not like he was being malicious. he just wasnt gonna pay out of his pocket for stuff people broke after 8 months. i mean if its been working for 8 months and then suddenly dies, its a computer part with no moving parts, so usually its something the user did , or something the user's computer did . i would be very happy just to see him try to help you since at least he's doing something.

Anyways, i always thought untamo was a good trader. I don tknow, i thought the whole running a business off anands thing wasnt even that bad, i mean everyone was happy in the end, but i guess anandtech forums would not want to be responsible if problems like that arose though, so i can see why it was stopped.

i think he shouldn't put the 1 year warrenty on his web page if he wasn't gonna honor it... or he should have put 1 year warrenty by manufacture or something

I had plenty of good deals with Andrew and really didn't even want to post this. He sold the cards with a one0year warranty...period. He should honor that regardless of what his supplier will or will not do. And about the Troll part (I edited that a bit).....just take a look at some of the stuff at Ars from back then....he had some definate problems over there and I and others defended him. But that's beside the point. I just think he should stand by what he sells. If he sells something with a one-year warranty he should honor it. I didn't think that would even be an issue.

 

True, but your arguing a moral issue and not a legal one.

When it comes down to it, do you have enough evidence to support that he owes you another card by law.

Period.

He was selling stuff as a dealer....not a private person....with a one year warranty which was advertised on his site. Sounds legally binding to me. If this was a newbee pulling this kinda stuff it would be a head hunt.

You have what is now an obsolete video card. You've had it for 8 months, & it has worked fine for you during that time.
The entity you purchased it from has since been banned from AT, in effect going out of business.
The card died, & now you want a new one?

This card has been problematic for a while and Andrew and I have communicated regarding this. He has also not necessarily gone out of business...he is still selling other places. Just not from a site and not around here. He still has contact with the same supplier who has since changed to a 30-day warranty instead of the previous 1-year. The fact that the card is not the "cutting edge" anymore is irrelevent. It worked fine in one of my kids' machines. The point is we have a dealer/seller or whatever you want to call him not standing by an original purchase agreement.
