Looking for some kitchen knives, buy a whole set or one or two good ones?

My girlfriend and I are looking to get some kitchen knives, since in her words "my knives suck." Anyway, I don't want to spend too much, under $100. So, I'm debating on either getting an OK set of knives, or like two really good ones. I can get these two
at Amazon, which look like two great knives.

Or, for a little less, I can get a full set of knives like these, but these are not as high quality as the two knives above.

So, would my money be better spent on a lower quality set like the one above, or two really good knives?

Also, anyone know a better place to get deals on knives? Thanks

Invest in one or two good knives, like Henckels Four-star or Five-star (link). If you take care of them, they will last forever.

i just bought the knives i needed. But i bought some good knives.

It would depend on how much you'll use your knives. Make sure you get "full-tang" (the metal from the knife blade extends all the way down the handle, so the handle looks like a little metal sandwich) and a good sharpener. I'd recommend getting just a few good quality knives (paring, 8" or 10" chef, etc.) over getting a whole set of crappier ones. I know that cooking.com is having some good sales on their knives (Henckels, Wusthof, etc.). This basic cook's set and this paring knife set may be a good choice.

Hmmm, ok looks like a few good ones is the way to go. I'm thinking of getting either Henckels or Wüsthof santoku knife, or a Chef's knife by either of those manufacturers.

Good god. A $79.99 of 14 knives will not include a single good knife. You get what you pay for. People who think their $50 is fantastic has never, ever used a really good quality knife. There is absolutely no comparison.

Buy a fewquality Wustfhof or Henckel (not a cheapo version they sell to the mass market) and they'll last you a lifetime.

If you really want a "set" - something likeTHIS will be more than ample for even the advanced home chef and will last you forever if you care for them.

FWIW, my parents bought an 8-knife block at Younkers several years ago and all the knives are still fine. They probably paid $60 or so for it. They're not Cutco, but they're still sharp and they still cut everything just fine.

I recently got the Wustoff and it is an awesome knife. Don't waste your money on the block, those are crap - I got those last year and they're already rusted.

the user reviews on those knives aren't that great....

how many different lines of knives does Wustfhof have?

4 or 5. Their classic (both white and black handles) and Grand Prix are their bread and butter, high quality knives. They have a couple of cheap, value lines (Silverpoint and Emeril lines I think?) which is the mass market/cheapo version that is made in China our of stamped steel. They also have the "Culinar" which is their Top-of-the-line IIRC. A really nice knife, but definetly not worth the premium over the Grand Prix/Classic.

Personally, I really like the Grand Prix. They feel exceptional in my hand and are like a natural extension of me when I use them.

So, would you recommend the Wüsthof Cook's knife or the santoku? The santoku I guess is the Asian chef's knife, it looks pretty versatile.

We've been slowly assembling a collection of Henckels 5 star over the years and now have quite a nice selection. They are very good and you'll never regret the quality they have. If they are taken care of in the least bit, they'll last forever. Fine edges, nice balance, excellent handles......started with a Chef's and a parer and the collection has grown.

We got a "starter set" of Henckels 5 Stars for a christmas gift (4-5 knives total I dont recall) and it came iwth a VERY nice block too. These knives are simply amazing. My wife (a Culinary degree holder and abuser) swears these are the best knives out there, and I cant imagine anything being nicer.

Hell if they are good enough for my wife, they are good enough for anyone (Except for Iron Chef Sakai maybe). Trust me.

i just got that set for xmas (with a different block and a few more random knives + 8pc steak knife set) and i must say it was worth every penny.

not exactly sure what part of the country you are from, but in minneapolis there is a wusthof outlet store that has prices between 10-50% off what amazon sells them fore, might want to look for one of those close to you =)

That is a high quality set. Personally, I prefer the ABS handle of the Grand Prix over the Classic though, but a lot of that is personal preference.

Best to handle the different ones if you can (admitidly a little tough over the internet!) and buy the ones that "feel" best for you.

lol 😀

iamme, its a good thing I guess. Just the grocery bill (and kitchen appliance/hardware) bills ring up MUCH more than my PC bills. Then again I benefit GREATLY from it once dinner is served 🙂

Another vote for Wusthoff. Save yourself the money and don't get a huge collection. A chef, bread, slicer, and paring knife is all you really need. I prefer to keep mine on the wall with kitchen magnet strips, as it allows any residual moisture on the knives to evaporate better and frees up countertop real estate.
Henckles are good too. If you really want to save some dough, but still want forged pieces, check out Tramontina as they are an excellent value.
