My parents were recently involved in a car accident and long story short the car is now totalled. The parents are all fine but we now need a new car. The budget currently is around $23,000 for a nice sedan. Things of prime importance are: reliability, safety, gas mileage and then maybe looks.

Currently we're looking at:

Camry XLE w/ leather seats and side/curtain airbags
Accord EX w/ leather and same stuff.

My question is, which one would you guys choose and are there are other good options? Parents are very partial to Japanese cars since they offer best bang for buck usually. And they are definitely not interested in an american car.

I'd go with the Accord :) I wouldn't mind owning a Sedan, EX 5-speed with navigation :)

Accord hands down. I test drove both before buying my 04 Accord - there is zero comparison, unless you're 80 years old, or your NFS4. :p

An EX sedan with leather will run about $23K MSRP, w/ Navi probably $25K. Depending on if that $23K budget is including TT&L. You may be hard pressed to get them to drop below invoice on the EX w/ Navi though.

I suggest the GTI because I have had one for 3 years now.
I find it to be very reliable and very fun to drive. Its a little more than your run-of-the-mill camry/accord. It's really one of those cars you can fall in love with.

PS. Mileage is 21/27 MPG (I've been able to avg 22 with all my cty/hghwy driving

Both are very good. You can't go wrong with either. So my advice is to go with whichever you can get the best deal. Which gives you more options, warranty, cheaper price. Its always good to have more than one car in mind when buying a new car, that way if you can't find a deal you want on a certain car, you look at the other car.

Two boring choices IMHO.

If your family only wants a Japanese vehicle (which is quite a close-minded view), I'd at least have them look at a 2004 Acura TSX or 02-03 TL.

the OP's two choices will kill the GTI in resale value and overall, VW's reliability isn't the best in the business...hope your luck keeps with your GTI though...

Because money isn't as important as having a new car with a full warranty? With a used car, you never know what had happened before, and how well it was maintained. I do not think it is the best economical decision, but if you can afford it, why not?

My parents are looking for a nice sensible vehicle, not a joyrider

Yeah. I asked my dad if he wanted to buy an used car and he said he didn't want to risk dealing with someone else's headache
