Looking for new 22" LCD monitor

Any recommendations for which monitor is the best choice at the moment? I have been looking through the monitors that are available and it seems the Samsung 226BW is the best choice in terms of color, speed, backlight bleed (there is apparently very little on this model). Anyone have experience with this monitor? Other monitors people would recommend?

According to urban dictionary the definition of an asshat is someone who has their head up their ass. Thus wearing their ass as a hat. I searched this specific monitor the 226bw which is what I was mainly asking about if you had read my post. There were no threads about this monitor, thus I posted one. Perhaps you should take your own advice and use the search function before posting useless advice. I've found other threads about 22" monitors but not the Samsung 226bw. I asked for other recommendations because if someone had experience with a monitor they thought was better than this one they could have recommended it.

Atlantean, I've seen a few people around here and on other forums asking about 226BW, however, I was not able to find it in any online stores. Your post sounds like you have an option to buy one right now ... where from? I'm looking to buy a 22" SOON, and I'm willing to take a risk with the 226BW ... if only I knew where to get it from.

Unfortunately it doesn't always work. I searched just now on the term "226BW" (no quotes of course) and this is the ONLY thread that comes up. I know it's been discussed before, but search does not find it.

Anyhow, I do have this monitor, have had it for about a week now. I bought it at Circuit City, in store, after checking their website for anywhere I could get a local pickup. Did have to drive across town since most stores didn't have it.

I've written it elsewhere here, but to sum it up, AFAIK this monitor is beautiful. Black is black, white is white, colors are bright, and you get pretty good... what's the word - latitude?... that you can still get a good picture off axis. I bought a 22" Sceptre from Newegg about a month ago and honestly it was no where near as good. The Samsung is every bit as good as the Dell 19" I just replaced, and I've always considered their montiors to be good. My Samsung has no dead pixels at all. On the bezel it says "2ms" and "3000:1 dynamic contrast". I can't verify that, but it is gorgeous to look at. Great for looking at pictures and monkeying with Photoshop. No idea about games.

I dont' have much (except that Sceptre) to compare it to, but I will say again it's beautiful.

(Sceptre was going to be returned until I remembered I peeled the SKU's off the side for a rebate :( will be on ebay soon.)

I've heard that it's better than the Acer.

I meant to put it on my recommendations list in place of the Acer for that reason and for the fact that it uses the first non-ChiMei Samsung 22" LCD panel. Less than 8 ms input lag in all situations with minimal ghosting and better default color reproduction. I say grab the 226BW. Five-star rating here: http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-312-1708-36.html

AL2216 vs 226BW: http://www.lesnumeriques.com/duels.php?ty=6&ma1=38&ma2=36&mo2=170&p2=1708&ph=1

Scratch the 'better default color reproduction' part. It doesn't, apparently. But it has much higher contrast at just under 1000:1. That's great for a TN. I've heard that the CMO panels are overbright and washed out. Generally Samsungs don't have that problem.

... yeah, but it costs a lot more than the Acer too (and two-color bezel is not the best style, IMHO)

There is a fairly long thread on the Samsung 226BW on HardForums: HERE The 226BW was maybe the best of the 22-inch widescreens until...

This bad surprise appeared Read down the page. Samsung has started switching panels on the 226BW. You can get either a Samsung panel or an AU Optronics panel. You have to open the box and look behing the screen to find which panel is used on a specific sample.

BernardP, thanks for the heads up. I guess I should get my buddy's COSTCO membership and go get a Sceptre (it even has some speakers built in -- exactly the solution I need for the next couple of years of moving from place to place). .. it's not the best LCD out there, but at least I will know I'm not overpaying.

I went and saw the 226BW at Circuit City today. I also saw three 22" Chi Meis (Samsung 225BW, ViewSonic VX22, HP w22). ViewSonic looked best IMO.

Few notes about the 226BW (Samsung panel):
- they had Windows Vista running on it
- turning overdrive (RTA-response time accelerator) on/off did not seem to make a difference.
- it was still a TN, contrast didn't look stellar (maybe not even as good as the Chi Meis judging by my own eyes) although LesNum measured it at <~1000:1.
- viewing angles were just fine. more details were revealed with small head movements but probably not a huge problem (definitely not for general usage) unless you're picky. black turned a little gray at very slight angle differences (common with TNs unfortunately).
- the 2 ms claims aren't a lie...the response time was very fast. no ghosting or smearing at all noticeable 95% of the time. LesNum tested this LCD at <8 ms input lag (half a frame) for all transitions.
- it had a glossy bezel but a matte coating on the glass (common misconception about Samsung's 'glossy' series). therefore it didn't look nice and vibrant like OptiClear panels, though white didn't look that bad.
- can't confirm whether the panel was AU Optronics or Samsung, probably Samsung (darkish even image looked like it).

I have the 225BW and love it great monitor, the 226 should be a good choice aswell, but be warned it doesn't come with a height adjustable stand like the 225BW which is kinda a must!

Well besides the Dynamic 3000:1 Contrast ratio (which I wouldn't put much faith into)... and the Glossy finish any other differences between the two? And obviously the stand that I pointed out in previous post.

samsung actually makes two 22" panels on their own, it is not rocket science that those two are in 225BW and 226BW, with later being bit better.

By the way, the 226BW doesn't have a glossy screen coating, just a glossy bezel.

Atlantean you are in canada, and so am I. The new LG L226WT has just become available at Futureshop and the Silver model is on sale for 399$.

Linky

I am just coming back from having a look at it. It was sitting side-by-side with a Samsung 225BW (not 226) and I was able to check vision angles sensistivity for both, as this is my main beef with 22-inch TN widescreens.

There is no doubt that the LG L226WT has better vision angles than the Samsung 225BW. From about 24 inches viewing distance, if I position my eyes in front of the bottom of the screen, the top of the Samsung's screen appears darker and browner, while no such effect is noticeable on the LG. I have to sink even lower below the LG to see this effect.

Left-Right sensitivity also appears noticeably better on the LG, but the problem is less critical than in the vertical axis to start with.

I have seen Acer, Samsung (225) and Viewsonic 22-inch widescreens until now, but the LG is the first I see that doesn't have obvious unacceptable (for me) viewing angle limitations.

I thought I would have to eliminate all 22-inch widescreens from consideration, but now, the LG L226WT might make me reconsider this. Since Futureshop allows for a full, no-question-asked refund within 15 days of purchase, I might well decide to pick up the LG L226WT as soon as I get a GeForce 8600 series card, in a couple of months. I guess the price will by then have settled well below $ 400.

I encourage you to go to Futureshop and have a look at the LG L226WT

LG L226WT available at Best Buy for rather steep $400 (black)... I was gonna jump on Sceptre (relatively cheap, has speakers = less clutter on the desk), but every other review on Newegg says the DVI port dies in a matter of days ...

Now also available at Newegg (for $370 + $13.73 shipping, but comes WITHOUT DVI-to-DVI cable). Labelled as New Arrival.

Yes, no DVI cable is shameful. I will have to borrow one to test this monitor if I buy it. Potentially better performance for this monitor is linked to the fact that LG uses their own panel:

Click on LM220WE1 on This page

As for the price, let's give it a little time for supply to increase.

The Samsung 226BW is on sale now at Circuit City for $379.99. Didn't know it was available at any B&Ms but apparently that's where most people have been getting theirs. Availability seems to be hit or miss though, so you might want to check in advance to make sure your store has them in-stock.
