right, heh, more like 400 users, 24/7. how much does at forums use?

Last time I heard from Jason, AT forums use something like 35GB or 40GB per day. Anand pays A FORTUNE for that.

Remember the subscriber forums? $35 per year for no ads? There were quite a few (dozen?) folks who subscribed and it *still* didn't pay for the forums.

Bandwidth is dirt cheap right now, the servers and operating them is a different story.

OP - 25gb/day is 750 a month, which you could easily get for about $100 a month. However, you would be looking at low end dedicated servers, not shared hosting accounts, and the type of files you are serving are another factor (as you would need a more powerul server)

Forum needs more hardware resources than bandwidth.

I'm looking for higher end, lightning fast servers. I think it is more about transfer's than actual bandwith...I plan to have a pretty busy forum.

A forum with 1,000 users online at once can be hosted for around $400 a month or so. I'm accounting for a managed Dual Xeon with a couple GB of ram.

would my own server be cheaper down the line?

With a lot of users online at once, bandwidth doesn't become an issue, hardware to process all the requests does. Bandwidth is cheap, higher end servers aren't.

Expect to pay a few hundred or more per month to be able to 'handle' the 25GB/mo. WHT has a bunch of companies offering services, take a look.

That really depends on your forum's growth. For a forum which grows quickly and has to constantly upgrade it's hardware it would be cheaper to lease rather than to own. You would also be responsble if a hardware component broke. If you are at a stable size then it may be worth the investment to purchase the server, but bandwidth prices will go up significantly if you are not leasing the box from a datacenter. For high bandwidth it is cheaper to go with leased (just about always) because the bandwidth price for leased boxes is incredibly cheap.

CyberWurx.com is a solid data center but these servers are UNMANAGED

I know this, but it would become more a question of processing so many requests, whilst keeping a fast connection, wit little or no lag.

If you start out slowly you could get away with a resellers account but at the very minimum a VPS (Virtual Private Server) which is $50/mo for 10GB/200GB. If you have more than 25 people at one time it slows down considerably especially if your site and/or forums uses MySQL a lot.

Don't be a cheap ass, get a dedicated server. I've seen them as cheap as $80/mo with no control panel and semi-managed.

Try a dedicated server @ 25GB/day.
