The same-old same-old isn't doing it for me anymore. MMO's don't have any real story line, just halfassed ones to push you along a quest line for 5 or 6 steps (Dark Age of Camelot actually had decent ones). Diablo had a great story line, until you beat it once. FPS's are really just mind-numbing twitch-fests...

I'm looking for a game with a REAL story line. Suggestions?

J/J. Honestly, I haven't played a PC game with a decent story in a long time. Then again, I have yet to pick up the Witcher.

SunnyD you realize how subjective this is?

Some players think that Doom 3 had a "good story line", and some think that Half-Life's story line isn't good.

What you define as being a good story line will inevitably differ from anyone and everyone else's definition.

It can be very subjective, but there are many games that most people will agree to have superior plots.

Unfortunately a lot of these games are rather older.

Deus Ex
Knights of the Old Republic
The Longest Journey
TLJ 2: Dreamfall
Freespace 1
Freespace 2

Maybe take up novel reading? ;) games with good plots are not that common.

Most RPGs have good stories - that's what they're all about.

-Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
-TES IV Oblivion (to a lesser extent IMO)
-KOTOR & KOTOR 2
-Half Life series have pretty good stories
-STALKER was pretty interesting

 to Baldur's Gate I/II/ToB

I just finished my Shadows of Amn playthrough and going through ToB currently. When I'm done with that I'll be starting a trilogy playthrough with an evil party (never played the first Baldur's Gate), and when I hit Shadows of Amn I'm gonna try solo with a sorcerer. Seriously, with the amount of mods the community has churned out, you could play through this game hundreds of times and not be bored. Doesn't hurt that the original game in itself is humongous (why does that word look so strange?).

Also: Final Fantasy VII and X. I don't know about the rest of the Final Fantasies, but if they're as good as these two, I'd play through them all if I still had a PS2.

I beg to differ.

There are quests in LOTRO and EQ 1 and 2 that are much
longer than 5 or 6 steps with good storylines.

Single player ones I have completed where I remember saying, Wow that was great, at the end:

Max Payne 1 and 2.
Half-Life, HL2

Don't remember any more at the moment.

I have so many games in progress I can't comment on the complete story, but enjoy them:

The Chronicles of Riddick, Escape from Butcher Bay (Director's Cut)

Hitman series

Thief series (still never completed the cavern mission in Thief 1 where I was stripped of my gear)

There may be others in my box I am not remembering.

Gothic series has a good story line ... so do the Elder Scrolls ... Thief Series also ... and i have to agree with KotOR/2 ... i also liked the way Fable:LC's story was developed but it wasn't very deep.

For a FPS, SS2 wasn't half-bad ... telling a story in PDAs left by the dead was copied by many later games. Deus Ex and IW was pretty good [for a fps-hybrid].

the most *wasted ruined story* in a recent game was in Hellgate: London ... it started with a great intro and kinda cool concepts regarding fighting demons ... then it deteriorated into reading chapters of a book as you progressed thru a very muddled story to a most unsatisfying ending.

Deus Ex

SW: Knights of the Old Republic

Splinter Cell 1-3 (haven't played 4)

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (not so much the 'save the world' story, but the background behind the awesome characters)

Call of Duty 4 (other than the story line being good, it's the most cinematic game I've ever played)

Total Annihilation. It doesn't so much have a deep story line as much as it has a very different and interesting story which the prequel Supreme Commander (and it's expansion) add to.

A savage war in the future has raged for over a thousand years, no trace of civilization remains and you are all that is left, the other side (neither good nor evil) shares the same for for no more reason then to prove your side is right and theirs is wrong. You will end the war with nothing less then the total annihilation of your enemy, for there is nothing left to win and to much lost to forgive.

If you're not into RTS's, then you can probably skip this one.

Here's some of mie

- Homeworld 1/2
- Starcraft/Brood war
- KOTOR
- Fallout 1/2
- Planescape: Torment
- Warhammer 40K - I'm really nerding it up, but the entire 40k storyline is interesting to me, so it may not really apply . . ..
- Baldur's Gate Series

That's a few off of the top of my head.

Yup, another nod for KOTOR - storyline in this StarWars game is better than the movies, even the original trilogy...
