- Warhammer 40K - I'm really nerding it up, but the entire 40k storyline is interesting to me, so it may not really apply . . ..
- Baldur's Gate Series

That's a few off of the top of my head.

Good selections there.

Homeworld 1. Easily the best storyline out of all the games I've played. Homeworld 2 is no slouch either. I didn't care much for Homeworld:Cataclysm.

Max Payne 1 was pretty good, too.

Looks like Planescape is definitely on the top of the list.

Warning. Once finished, gaming is only downhill from there.

Call me crazy, but I didn't really enjoy the KOTOR storyline that much. The game was a lot of fun, but the storyline was uneven and weird for me.

Half Life 2 is the only recent game that comes to mind. My all time favorite game in terms of story is probably Star Control 2

The story is the most important aspect of a game to me as well. Oblivion amazed me, because it has literally thousands of quests, and they all have indepth stories to go along with them. It must have taken forever to make that game.

Final Fantasy 3 for the SNES had probably my favorite story line, along with Dragon Warrior 4 for the NES. I loved the story behind Wing Commander 4. Biff (from Back to the Future) as Maniac was AWESOME! Under a Killing Moon had a great story to go with it as well. NWN2 has a pretty good story to go with it. STALKER isn't bad either, although it isn't as polished as Oblivion (Some of the story lines are real weak, at least the ones that aren't part of the main quest). HL2 has a good story line to help you along, although it is very linear. The whole Hitman series has a great storyline to back them up as well. Resident Evil always has a good story to go with the game.

I think I named enough of my favorite story type games. Oh, I forgot Command and Conquer. Tiberium Dawn and Red Alert both had very good and engrossing storylines throughout each game. Warcraft 3 also had a good story, but Warcraft 2 was more about gameplay than the story. Starcraft had a very good story line as well. HOMM5 has a pretty good story to go with the game as well.

Another vote here for KoTOR, KoTOR II to a lesser extent but a must play after the first.

Also agree with a lot of others like Planescape and definetely Vampire: Bloodlines which I was going to suggest as well. Good choice there Dave.

You said Planescape was at the top of your list, KoTOR and Vampire: Bloodlines should be there too

Best game ever.

Agreed, best story line in a game I've ever played.

I think I can only repeat the previous ideas.

Homeworld
Knights of the Old Republic (and its sequel was OK)
Deus Ex
Baldurs Gate 1,2 and expansions
Max Payne 1 and 2

American McGees Alice
Clive Barkers Undying
Alien Vs Predator 2 (not too complex, but well told)
Call of Duty 1
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault
Elder Scrolls 3 and 4 had fantastic stories, but they dont play out for you. You have to go and find them yourself.
Fallout 2
I thought Freelancer had a decent story but like the Elder Scrolls games, too much wandering around and slow time to make it cohesive.
Full Throttle
No One Lives Forever 2 (parody of 60's/70's spy movies, fun)
Septerra Core was a japanese-like, consolish RPG title with a better than average story.
Tron 2.0
Total Anihilation: Kingdoms. It isnt exactly an action-packed story, but the cutscenes in between missions are suprisingly professional and interesting.
I thought the story in Unreal 2 was actually good, but most folks remember the action.
Neverwinter Nights 2 is alright, and the expansion improves the story and storytelling a lot.

Overall: I pick Deus Ex. When you start to figure everything out it will BLOW YOUR FUCKING MIND MAN!

If you're into the whole gangster thing at all, Mafia has great story. It's kind of like Grand Theft Auto, except it's set in the 30s and unlike GTA you don't feel like you're playing a game made for 13 year olds.

 Was just about to post this. And the voice acting is incredible in that game too.

I agree The Longest Journey was wonderful.
Also try Syberia and Syberia II (really two halves of the same story).

Diablo had a great story line, until you beat it once. FPS's are really just mind-numbing twitch-fests...

I'm looking for a game with a REAL story line. Suggestions?

Does it have to be new?
Myth II Soulblighter was absolutely amazing. Imo playing it was as fun as the LOTR books or the movies. Never seen anything like it. The original halflife was fantastic but didn't touch Myth II. It's like you're playing a movie.

Indigo Prophecy kept me interested most of the way through, though the ending could have been better.
Another vote for KOTOR as well. And Bioshock.
