Ive been playing age of empires series for a decade now and I'm ready to move on. I want to play a game that has base building like in Age of Empires 2 but has a larger scopt to it. Something like 10 six, a game by sega that was free online like 8 years ago. I dont like turn based that much, so Civ series is out. And C&C games are too fast and repetitive. I enjoyed Company of heroes and Dawn Of War, but overplayed those as well. Can anyone reccomend some cool base building strategy game? Thanks

Settlers series? not much base building per se, but a lot of city building and there is some combat.

Ceasar series? I think Ceasar IV is the latest. Haven't played the latest, but the originals were a lot of fun. More city building than pure base building. Kind of Age of Empires meets Sim City.

Supreme Commander + addon?

Had a good time with those games, and you can build some killer bases. Great units, too.

Black & White 2.
You build a city and raise a army, along with a super creature. YOU are the hand of god himself (quite litterly).

Supreme Commander + Forged Alliance expansion (standalone, but with securom cd check).
VERY large scale, you can zoom in as much as you like along with move the camera around to get a better view. There is also a sandbox mode where you have no enemies and the map never ends, allowing you to build whatever you want, you can also continue after all enemies have been defeated.

Sins of a Solar Empire.
Basically a RTS with elements of Civ thrown in (no turns though) that can take up to a few days to play if you really want to. You colonize asteroids and planets in solar systems connected by phase gates. You can upgrade planets (including increasing populations), build orbital structures and raise huge fleets. As you empire grows you will see increased civilian traffic on both planets and in space (but not on asteroids).

Medieval II: Total War
While a turn based game, you wage land battles in real time with entire Armies. Though you can not decide where to place settlements or see much change inside towns.

World in Conflict
Not a base building RTS, the game have very detailed towns in most of its maps. Oh, and everything is destructible.
Spectate and watch two sides tear a town apart.

And i've run out of ideas atm.

why do people always list things that have nothing to do with the OP's request? granted, the 1st 2 are ok, but the last 3 are not even close to what he is asking for.

Ok, MII:TW was a stretch, WiC might be of interest to him and Sins is very relevant with a great deal of "base" building on each planet which tie together into a empire.

it's been awhile since i played Sins, but i don't recall any base building. you could build a few space turrets, but it's nothing like a traditional base building rts. 90% of the game is flying your fleets around with the planets zoomed out until they are little colored balls.

Try Grand Ages: Rome. It's coming out feb 2009. It's predecessor, Imperium Romanum was heiled as Age of Empires + a CB, but I call B.S.

See if Grand Ages: Rome, see if it's any good.

In Sins you have the gravity well around planets and asteroids in which you can place structures.
These structures are:
-Turrets
-Hangers
-Phase inhibitors
-Repair bays
-Trading ports
-Metal refineries
-Civic research stations
-Military research stations
-Capital shipyard
-Frigate/cruiser shipyard
-Media hubs
-Metal/crystal mines

You have a limited vertical axis in which to place structures but you have the whole horizontal axis to play with.

Refineries and trade ports automatically produce NPC controlled ships that will go from one station to the next, this can lead to so much traffic it becomes a problem to zoom in without focusing on one. On planets you can also see the increase in "low orbit" traffic to and from space elevators.

Then you have the ships you can create and place into a fleet which will organize itself into formation.

The size can be anywhere from 1 solar system with 4 planets or 20 solar systems with 50 planets each/whatever your computer can handle.

I picked up LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II (rts) at Gamestop today for ten bucks. LOTR games have been mostly lackluster, but this is the best of the bunch.

By the way, has anyone picked up Caesar 4? I am tempted to get it for cheap now, just for old time's sake.

by itself it wasn't a bad continuation of the series. What it does suffer from is that they made everything for nice 3D graphics, so to compensate for those with less than cutting edge computers they shrunk the playfield you have. In any of the previous titles (ceasar and pharoah line) I've never come close to running out of land. In C4 land management due to lack of space became a strategy concern for me.

A very similar feeling to Sid Rails when I played it.

I recall they changed the RTS/Military aspect to the game, did they, or was it the same as previous CB games?

hmm, now I'm having to think a bit. It's been like a year and a half since I played, but I believe it was scaled down like the rest of the game. You still build military items and a small army contingent, but seem to recall them in game acting almost like another police force against small level skirmishes with the addition of you having to send troops and or supplies to the governor/emperor when requested.
