<< I'm looking at an HP 940C right now, it looks like a good quality printer for a good price. Any suggestions or ideas? >>

If you're looking at the 940C, then you might want to take a look at the HP 960C. The black ink cartridge in the 960 is almost twice as large as the one in the 940, and the two cartridges cost the exact same price. So in theory you'll make up that $50 extra you'll spend on the printer after you buy your first two ink cartridges; in the long run it'll save you a lot of money.

<< Epson has permanent print heads that save you money on ink costs......if you don't use them they colg up///still I use mine often so no biggie..GREAT QUALITy too..

BLows HP AWAY..CANON destroys HP too... >>

If cost is an issue, you can't beat an HP..

<< I asked this question recently, of course in the proper forum, wink wink nudge nudge, but I guess it's OK here too since all the really smart people usually hang here, but anyway, I asked, thinking I'd get the HP 1315?, it's in the other room and I got a bad leg, and I was told that any of the top hp, probably the photo realt 3, or is it 2, printers are identical in print quality, but vary in features, so if money is an issue, get the best hp in this class that has the features you need and I think you'll be happy. >>

The HP Photosmart 1315 is $399, well above the $150 that the 940C costs. It's a very nice printer, but does he really need all of that? And you're almost right about the quality: HP's 920C ($99) has the same quality as the Photosmart 1315 ($399), including all their printers in between.

I'm not too worried about photo-quality printing right now. If I ever do want to do it, I can email a picture to my dad and have him print it out (he has a Kodak photo printer).

I just want something that's good quality, that'll last me for the next five or six years, and whose print cartridges are semi-reliable. That 960 sounds tempting.

HP 960Cse for $160 with free shipping after $40 off $200 coupon.

For the coupon go to Google.com and search for Staples.com coupon codes.

Nice!

Any dif between Cxi and Cse?

I have no clue, when it comes to color inkjet Epson rules and Brother rules in black & white laser printers so you're asking the wrong Ferengi.

Maybe check HP.com or Google.com for specs?

<< Are there any decent laser printers y'all can recommend?

Photo quality isn't that big of a deal, I just need something reliable that can pump out a lot of pages of text, if need be. Color quality is a plus, too.
>>

If you really plan to pump out a lot of text pages, you may end up ahead by getting a $200 laser printer and something like a $39 Lexmark Z13.
I use an old IBM (Lexmark) 4019 laser printer for heavy text jobs and a Lexmark 5700 for the occasional color page. Cost per page is quite a bit lower on my laser printer.

<< I have an HP 932C and it's pretty good. The 940C you've looked at it probably just fine

Cheers!
>>

Hehe, rock on, thanks. I'm going to see if I can somehow fix my old printer, but I'm leaning towards just buying the 960C. I'm going to see what my parents think, though, see if they have any recommendations.

I'd put my HP 1220Cxi or my 990Cxi up against anything Epson or Cannon or Lexmark has to offer! I do lots of older photo work (antique photos) and the wide format 1220Cxi is simply the best I've found for this........and my customers agree!😉 As for billing and regular daily printing, the 990Cxi is as fast as they come and also does excellent phots etc.!🙂

<< 785 epx i just bought does really nice photos but the text seems to leave something to be desired... at least in quick mode... my lexmark had better looking text in quick mode... maybe i should leave it plugged in... it was refusing to work so i got the new one and sure as sht it starts working again... stuff like this happens to me. its dumb. >>

the 785epx isn't that good at low resolution text, and at higher resolution (720dpi) it is slow but much better. It really wasn't designed for text printing, as it is a photo printer. Lexmark and HP do much faster and much better text, but they pale in comparison to epsons photo quality capabilities. If you are doing black text printing, just be sure to select the black ink tank before printing. Always turn Epson printers off by the power button.

With my 785EPX, Print Image Matching with my Nikon coolpix, and 2880dpi, you'd lose 🙂

Um............no I wouldn't..........how exactly will you keep up with my wide format printing on the 1220Cxi???😉 If you do photos and want true 8"X10"'s and larger (as most do) you'll know wide format is a must!😉 As for quality, I have a friend with one of those and to be honest, even he agreed he couldn't see a difference!🙂

Four years is a great lifespan for a printer- definitly go with HP again. I have a 2001-model 932c and I LOVE it. Very fast and quiet- it's virtually the most perfect printer I've ever used. Killer photo prints too. I aquired mine off a forum last fall for $80 shipped, and I know you can find them new, sealed on eBay for about that much. Otherwise, get the one that retails for ~$150 at your local Best Buy, Staples, Office Max, etc- it's comparable and probably even a little better.

For another larger than a 8.5x11 I wouldnt use a 785EPX. It isnt wide carriage printer. The largest size it will print is 8.5x11 borderless. It does boderless 4x6, 5x7,8x10, 8.5x11, and without the need for special paper trays.

Get your eyes checked. There is a reason that HP isn't an accepted printer in the digital photography world. Go read reviews on any of the digital photography websites -- oh wait, they don't review HP printers. Epson and Canon OWN the photo printer category.

Whatever................Oh wait...........I DO photography and photo enhancing work!🙂 I've had Epson's and Cannon's and Lexmarks.............perhaps you need to check your eyes.............😉 Reviews................LOL! Up until about 2 years ago nobody "reviewed" AMD chips either............Matrox hasn't been "reviewed" as a gaming card for years either.............and that's about to change............don't knock what you haven't seen or used............

the fact that you even mention Lexmark in the same sentence as Canon and Epson, shows how much you know about photo printing. I've seen enough HP printouts to know that their thermal inkjet is no match for Epson. Keep your HP. I don't care. I just hate seeing people suckered into HP when they are the highest cost per page when printing photos. The original poster said photo printing doesn't matter, so HP would be fine if he wants better text speed and quality.
