I am looking for a new laptop, but I have no idea what to look for. I currently have a PowerBook, but I need a windows PC for school. I am looking for a reasonably light, small, widescreen laptop that I can do some moderate gaming on. My budget is about $1500. Can anyone recommend any good notebooks?

I have a PB and use it for school. But then again, different strokes for different folks. I will say though that my needs are very elementary, I just need to type, use some version of AIM, itunes. I dont need any PC software for architecture or graphing or anything. I am an english major.

My advice to the OP: trade your PB if you dont want it anymore. PB's have exceptionally good trade value. You could probably get a low end dell or so and then get some cash ta-boot.

I just got my Compal 2030 from Mwave.com and it's a nice machine for some moderate gaming (WoW and Age of Empires 3 demo runs pretty good on it). You can see the specs here: http://www.discountlaptops.com/index.ph...=1225&category_id=10&category_theme=c1

It weighs less than 5 pounds and gets about 3 hrs of battery life. The only complaint I really have is the screen but I'm comparing it to my Dell 2005FPW which really isn't fair. I got mine configured to a little over $1000 which is a lot better than the Asus W3V I wanted which is $1700ish.

if you have 1500 and want something with Apple quality and design, do not buy a dell! You should go to a dell store and compare with your OWN eyes. Pretty much most light dell notebooks are crap. The only reason people here like them is because they got big discounts on those, and they admit dells are $cheap.

Yeah get the IBM or Asus. Or a tablet PC from IBM.

or... just run virtual Windos on your PB. If it's something non-intensive program, I'm sure the PB can manage it.

IBM PCs are expensive. Im looking for a <$1600 widescreen WSXGA+ or better, 15" notebook with decent gaming performance. Dell is the only one that can provide this for me. Im anti-Dell, but as a student, I cant afford better. Any suggestions?

Asus z70va (the new version with the x700 card) would work for you I think.

As a rule the x700 will be slower. The 6800's direct competitor is the x800. The x700 should be plenty to play most current games at decent settings. The 6800 will be faster but usually comes attached to a 17" screen which I'm not found of. You should be able to find comparisons of the desktop variants of these two cards easily. They won?t be an exact representation of how the mobile cards will perform but they should be close enough to get an idea of the differences between the two.

I just priced a 17" Dell Inspiron with a 6800 for ~$1700. I cant find a comparable Asus Z70VA for a similar price.

Try my link above. You of course need to do what ever fits you but as for my self I would rather have a z70va over an I9300 (and I have a ton of experience with Dells.... typing on a latitude d610 now actually). The I9300s are decent notebooks but they are to large and heavy in my opinion.

if you dont mind me asking, how is the z70va better than the i9300, other than the fact that its not dell?

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 740 (1.73 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB)
Operating System
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Display
17 inch UltraSharp? Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife? (1920x1200)
Memory
1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz 2 Dimm
Video Card
256MB NVIDA® GeForce? Go 6800
Hard Drive
60GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
CD/DVD Drives

Is it worth the savings to get a dell?

Asus has better build quality IMHO. Other then that it would come down to your preferences. I do not like most 17" notebooks because they are heavier and soak up battery like crazy. If I remember right the 9300 will be close to 10 pounds. To me that is just too heavy for a notebook, especially when you aren?t giving up that much performance with the z70va.

Dells do not suck. I know some people on the forums act like Dell is Hitler?s long lost brother but they do put out a decent product. Are there notebooks that are built better? Absolutely! Does this make Dells suck? Not hardly.

I would venture to say that many people here have worked with as many Dell notebooks, workstations, and especially servers as I have. I currently work in an all Dell shop and I am my company?s representative to Dell support. If something is broke and we need Dell support to replace it then I am the one that handles it. I would be lying if I told you there products don?t have problems at times but at the same time my experience is they do not have any more problems then any other OEM. I would just make sure you get a decent warranty with it just in case. Having to pay for a mobo replacement when your notebook is out of warranty will not be cheap.

For school eh? Hope you won't be dragging this thing to class with you. The 9300 is a nice value...but way too huge to be hauling around, IMO.

That's what I have been trying to tell him, whoever wants a laptop for school, then he needs to forget the whole gaming deal, and focus on portability, then after that look if he can get some decent graphics configuration within the portability circle.
