Not really. Look at pictures of recording studios and you'll see how wide they set their speakers.

But are they still clearly in front of them?

They can be "wide" but still within a decent proportion.

I can help but think there would be complete and total separation with no well-imaged middle-ground if I went with what I drew.

If they were set further back and the monitors weren't blocking them, but kept that width relative to my head, they could still keep great imaging because they would be further away from my head. Speakers can be quite far apart, it's a proportional methodology: the further away they are from the ears, the further apart they should be.

Speakers should do more projecting outward from a shared plane (with some toe-in to guide to the listening position, of course), not hyper-focusing toward one specific spot.

Yeah screw it - I'm in for a pair of the HD598 on Amazon. Great deal - looking forward to experiencing a good open set. And I'll be curious to see how much I can hear of the surrounding with that kind of pair - might be the balance I'm looking for.

Isolation has its merits, but sometimes, the sound of a larger open soundstage is just the ticket.

Good speakers/monitors will come another day.

Thanks for the advice so far in this thread. I was looking at black friday deals and noticed that guitar center has a pair of Presonus Eris 4.5 nearfield studio monitors for $150. Anybody have any thoughts on these particular studio monitors? They seem to be pretty well reviewed.

Well the monoprice ones, of equivalent size, are currently out of stock and a bit more expensive. Granted the price difference isn't much and I'm still considering them but I wanted to get opinions on these as well.

No clue. Never seen them before. Nut that just means I haven't seen them, nothing more.

The monoprice ones have two separate amps, the ones you linked are in one cabinet.

That accounts for the price difference then, should've noticed that myself. For now I'll keep an eye out for when they're back in stock. I may decide to go with the 3"ers as well, but the 8"ers are just way too big for my desk.

Edit: Nvm on the 3"ers, they're a similar setup to the AV30s with the amp in the left speaker.

I was going to suggest studio monitors myself, they seem to be overlooked by many in general. I'd use the myself if I didn't have a pretty large AVS system I use on the main.

Maybe check out Sweetwaters also, hadn't looked till you brought it up.

The JBL's look pretty nice at half price right now for a 5" with good looking tweeters, but $99 each.

The reviewers there rave about them, even compared to much more expensive ones, without a sub.

A bit of toe in is not a bad thing.
It would be extreme toe in my case, about 75 degrees. I do have some space between the wall and the back of the desk. But then they would be firing through my 3 monitors.

People with their three monitors. Make them portrait, space them out and have the speakers sit between the monitors :awe:

Would love to do that, only problem is that my monitors do not rotate. So then I'd have to by three new 22" IPS panels that do rotate and that adds a bunch more than I want to spend so that I can use speakers. :p

Might give them some thought but they're likely a bit too big for my desk.

They are non powered and still sell for $120+ each anywhere I looked at.

The JBL's have two separate amps also.

The JBL monitors would be cheaper and powered, but GL I guess.

I still have the JBLs on the top of my list, not in a rush currently just looking for the best bang for the buck and they're currently sitting on the top. Waiting to see what price the monoprice 5"ers sell for if they happen to go on sale. I haven't seen them in stock from the beginning of Thanksgiving until today.

I know they aren't "speakers" - but hot damn, I just got my Sennheiser HD598 (an upgrade from the HD280)... my jaw D: that's a close approximation.

I have them attached to my Xonar U7 (USB soundcard/DAC w/ headphone amp). I mean... I just did not think the difference would be so drastic - but I knew I would appreciate an open-back set of cans more than a closed set. I have a set of Shure IEMs (SE201s, I think) so I can get that full closed sound if I want it, but I... these are magical.

I'm sure I'd be drooling, literally, if I had something like the 650 or 800, but for now, I am plenty happy. These sound so much fuller.
Very happy. :)

Why do you need them to rotate? Just setup on video card.

Now fire up Telarc remastered 1812 overture on dvd-audio and blow your ear drums out :awe:
