I have been checking out different types of rum and I am undecided between the following:

Appleton Estate Extra

El Dorado Special Reserve 12 year

Mount Gay Extra Old

I might eventually try Old Monk 7 year Blended.

what would you guys choose?

I'm not a big rum fan, but the Mt Gay you have listed is pretty good stuff.

Kind of. Rum is really cheap to make and generally regarded as an inferior quality liqour overall. Hence not many people drink it straight so although I would imagine the aging does help the flavor (the Pyrat XO I have is better than the Bacardi Select I have straight) since it is almost always getting mixed anyways it normally doesn't matter.

I really don't like rum, but if I have to drink it, Appleton isn't half bad.

I've had all the rums listed in the OP at one point or another.

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23-year is the only one that graces my liquor selection for straight drinking. This is hands down my favorite.

Appleton Special is absolutely great. It isn't expensive, but don't let that fool you. It is high quality rum and mixes perfectly with everything that rum normally goes well with. Trust me. The Jamaicans know their rum.

My favorite is Flor De Cana. It's nicaraguan and that stuff is SMOOTH.

I mainl had it while over there and it's hard to find over here arond whre I live. I typically get captain morgan though, that's been my drink for years.

Captain Morgans is kind of like eating at Olive Garden for 20 years and then going to Italy. Some people come home from Italy thinking Olive Garden is better Italian food but they really are just not used to what truly good Italian food tastes like. Nothing against Olive Garden btw. I love them too.
