"Lone Ranger" Filmmakers Blame Critics

Apparently the stars and Producer of The Lone Ranger never saw the trailer for their movie because they think the critics are the reason the movie tanked. Note the idea that we have seen Johnny Depp play a character with Makeup on how many times before? Or that the action looked too over the top and unrealistic. Or maybe it is the fact that we have seen this movie several times before because the concept is unoriginal but dressed up in a new suit.

But i never saw this movie, i saw the trailer and did not see anything new or worthwhile to watch.

According to Depp:
"I think the reviews were written seven to eight months before we even released the film. I think the reviews were probably written when they heard that Gore (Verbinski) and Jerry (Bruckheimer) and I were going to do 'The Lone Ranger.' They had expectations that it must be a blockbuster. I didn't have any expectations of that. I never do."

Jerrry Bruckheimer:
"I think they were reviewing the budget, not reviewing the movie. The audience doesn't care what the budget is — they pay the same amount to see the movie if it costs a dollar or $20 million. It's unfortunate because the movie is a terrific movie, it's a great epic film. It has lots of humor. Its one of those movies that whatever critics missed in it this time, they'll review it in a few years and see that they made a mistake."

Armie Hammer:
"While we were making it we kind of knew that people were gunning for it. I think it was the popular thing when the movie hit rocky terrain to jump on the bandwagon to try and bash it. They tried to do the same thing with 'World War Z'; it didn’t work, the movie was successful. Instead they decided to slit the jugular of our movie."

I did not even care to check the reviews once I had seen how awful the trailer made the movie look

i know a handful of people who saw this movie and they all really enjoyed it. once again i don't care at all what movie critics say about movies. i'll gladly watch it when i get a chance to at redbox. i think it looks great.

Armie, do you think maybe that the difference between your movie and WWZ was that one was GOOD????????????

I saw the trailer for this movie and had absolutely zero interest in seeing it. I don't care about the Lone Ranger and I definitely don't give a fuck about Tonto (especially if a white guy, even if the white guy is Johnny Depp, is playing the role).

I never bothered to read any reviews because the movie didn't interest me.

If you have bad taste in movies, then yes, ignore critics

The movie didn't have aliens, or robots or spaceships.

Of course it was a flop.

When 'Cowboys and Aliens' was being released I was kind of lukewarm to the premise but I did end up watching it and was entertained.

This movie just looked like a pile of dogcrap from the beginning.

If Johnny Depp doesn't like the critics he should leave the country and live somewhere like France.

I think in this day and age, movie critics are probably among the most worthless groups in society. Would anyone care if they all suddenly vanished?

This whole summer seems to have been somewhat of a bust for movies. There have been quite a few that I was interested in seeing, this one included, but I didn't because of the terrible reviews. I want to see Elysium this week, but it's doing somewhat poorly with a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anyway, there may have been some bias from people that are tired of Depp playing the same character, but I haven't heard that many good things from people that have seen the movie. I did have a friend tell me that he enjoyed it, so it might be worth a rental.

EDIT:

I saw this article on CNN about how a black lawman may have been the inspiration for the Lone Ranger. It's kind of an interesting read:

Eh, I didn't think World War Z was that great. It was a bit too predictable, but overall, it was okay. I think it's worth seeing once at a modest price (matinee?).

I had zero interest in seeing the movie BUT everyone that I have talked to, that went to see the movie, loved it.

They forgot the Lone Ranger is the main character, not his sidekick Tonto. All the buzz centered around Tonto. Audiences don't care about the character Tonto, thus few showed up to see their movie, other than diehard Depp fanlets.

Haven't seen it myself - that's just my perception. I did hear the show on tape growing up.

Comparing it to WWZ is not accurate either. WWZ was getting bad press because they had to reshoot the ending and most movies that happens to are not good and do not sell tickets. But i hear WWZ is good and I will see it on video.

I couldn't get past an actor who's name is Armie Hammer. Sorry, change your name before I have any interest in seeing your work.

The trailers looked bad and seemed to focus more on Tonto than The Lone Ranger. That and I never cared for the character/story anyway. Johnny Depp as Tonto was just a bad decision.
