I'm almost 100% sure they aren't stainless steel. There is no reason for them to be. They are probably chromed mild steel or chromed aluminum.

Vrolok - With a tin can or some other sort of can you could heat a small batch of water pretty easily - perfect for an MRE or other mix-with-water meal.

Just make sure you cook all that chrome shit off the steel first, though. Not sure if you'd get sick off of it or not, but do you really want to take a chance?? :hmm:

The smallest survival stove I have will use any kind of solid fuel, but it's a bit more robust than an altoids tin. Then I've got the typical larger camping stoves that use anything from charcoal to propane, etc.

Yes, they are chromed steel. They're the wrong color for stainless, and yes, the coating will flake off if the wire is bent or damaged.

Wikipedia says:
