question is, are fan grills pure stainless steel? or zinc galbvanized? how can you tell

I'm almost 100% sure they aren't stainless steel. There is no reason for them to be. They are probably chromed mild steel or chromed aluminum.

Vrolok - With a tin can or some other sort of can you could heat a small batch of water pretty easily - perfect for an MRE or other mix-with-water meal.

I think I'll still take my mini camping/survival stove over this lil guy. 🙂

Genius. I've got like 500 of the damn things. Might actually be a useful item in a survival kit

Just make sure you cook all that chrome shit off the steel first, though. Not sure if you'd get sick off of it or not, but do you really want to take a chance?? :hmm:

Something that size would be ideal to grill mouse burgers. :awe:

I've seen them flake before. I'm sure it varies, but AFAIK they're just chromed steel.
Yes, they are chromed steel. They're the wrong color for stainless, and yes, the coating will flake off if the wire is bent or damaged.

Wikipedia says:

...
The acute oral toxicity for chromium(VI) ranges between 50 and 150 µg/kg.
