Except delays and delays lead to a lack of belief in the dates for ANY part they have mentioned.

Maybe the judge will let them make cards instead of license plates in prison, and they can meet the deadline?

Perhaps ATI are going to be like the Iraqi Intelligence man.

"Nvidia, are NOT in our offices!!!!!" - Video shoot of Nvidia raiding ATI offices in the background.

Perhaps ATI are having problems with leakage like Intel had? We seem to know that yields are low despite whatever they've done.

ATI may be able to compete with the GF8 if they eventually get used to this manufacturing process.

Intel just had a bad formula to begin with, extremely high clockspeed, no SOI, on a bleeding edge small process, with strained silicon (which further increases leakage).

AMD had an advantage from an engineering standpoint with SOI and the "wide" architecture with a shorter pipeline that didnt require the insane clockspeed.

I drove past the ATI HQ's about a week ago and everything looked fine. :)

Actually, they are in a slump, and they say that these corportate scandals can be a hindrance to a company the size of ATI. Hopefully they will bust the ones involved, kick them out of the company, replace them with decent people, and then they will start to recover.

In the near future I predict Nvidia to take over the world. I hope Matrox wakes up, and ATI needs to seriously bounce back from this.

They say that scandals like this exist in just about every large corporation. Money can breed evil.

It sure doesn't look good for Ati, especially when there is one time chance to cash in in the low end segment. From what nvidia predicted, the demand for mainstream graphics card recently began picking up, driven by Intel?s integrated chipset shortage. According to Paul Sun, general manager of Nvidia Taiwan Sales, the rising demand is expected to contribute an additional one million graphics card shipments to the industry every month in the second half of this year. [sources: Digitimes">http://www.digitimes.com/mobos/a20050819A6031.html</a> ]

That should contribute a big loss to them since their competitor is able to dominate the chipset shipment and should help in gaining a rather large chunks of market share. After all, it is the integrated chipset that has the biggest share of graphic display market. The X300 is not a good competitor to 6200 since the low end market is always looking for feature first then performance. Anyway, I am regretting owning Ati's share now.

Who says they can't make other Low end graphics cards from the current 480 chip?

Oh yeah - not just ATI; AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, (what's left of VIA), &tc.

Although I agree with everyone here and their negative feelings towards ATI's recent performance, I am slightly curious how much our opinions actually matter to companies like ATI. I know people have pointed this out before, but enthusiasts make up like 2% of their market. Basically I am not criticizing anyone here, I am just genuinely curious about ATI's current financial situation, because something tells me that a lot of people out there are still buying 9550's.

well i dont think the money they make on the 9xxx series will keep them alive for too long if the trend continues this way.

More bad news. Seems to just get worse for Ati all the time. Hopefully they can get it together so we have some sort of competition in the high-end.

They care because the profit margin is much higher at the high end. Same as GM makes more money selling one Escalade than ten Cavaliers.

They need to get their act together if they want to keep their faithful (I love ATi, but after these delays and stupid things I just can't be bothered to wait).

I built my new A64 X2 system in July and have been waiting for ATi to release their X900. All I'll say is that I'll wait for the X900 XL and if it's weaker than the G70 then guess who's getting an eVGA 7800 GTX with the 490 O/C. If the R520 XL is faster then I'll get that, but either case, I'm done waiting on stuff.

I think it's wise to wait for what you really want but this is getting ridiculous. I swear, if I hear ATi say something asinine to a question like, when will the R520 be released? and ATi answers with "When it's Done" response, I think there will be some blood shed over a response like that. If you don't want to end up like 3drealms then don't act like them! Oh and if ATi says something the R520 is cancelled then I'll be moving back to nVidia for sure!

So you're "waiting" but you're "done waiting", and you'll stop waiting if ATI tells you they've cancelled what you're waiting for.

Interesting post. Enjoy the wait.

Well I like ATi but I'll only wait so long. I'll wait until early September. It's just that I really wanted the R520 and like everyone else expected it to come out before the G70 did and now more delays. Unless I read some official benchmarks that say the R520 is 15% faster or more than the G70, I'll be getting the G70. Unless of course I see nVidia releasing the 7800 Ultra with 512MB of ram. Then again, I can't spend more than about $650 for a video card and a 512MB nVidia card will almost certainly cost more than that. Then again the 7800 GTX can be had for $390 now...

Good or bad, I just wish ATi would release something. They are losing customers daily because of this delay. As impatient as I am, it's a miracle I've waited this long already!

I don't see how you could "want" something that you don't have any idea what it is. To each their own, someday ATI will probably release a card they call the r520.

I'm just going by all the hype surrounding the card. I should say all the hype from the original tape out of course. Assuming the R520 is what they will be releasing in a couple weeks or so, it may be completely different. I just don't want to buy a G70 today, and then find out two weeks from now that the R520 is 30% faster for the same price. Then again the 7800 GTX can be had for as little as $390 now at Pricewatch. That's just crazy. In about two months time the G70 which debuted at about $650 has depreciated almost 50% in price in only a 2 month period. That's just incredible even for the computer industry!

Of course the current price it's at now is what it should have debuted at anyway but hey, nVidia has probably made the bulk of the their money off the G70 that they're going to make on it, so they made out pretty well!

Let's just put it as this:
I'm sure you were waiting for the 7800 GTX and the SLI awhile back, correct? And when it came out, boom you had it, and your happy with it right? Same with us R520'ers.:)

Perhaps, but more money is made in the mid to low end markets simply through higher volume of sales.

The lucrative market has always been in the mid-range and low-end where NVIDIA eventually filled the void with the 6600 and 6200 series.

http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/bfg_geforce_6600_gt_oc/index.shtml

The most noticeable changes wrought by the higher level of competition can be seen in the prices and transparency of offerings. Last year was one of the best years to be a consumer, particularly in the low and midrange markets, which are the real money makers for all graphics chip and card manufacturers.
