In your world maybe, the rest of the world says '76 mustang. :) Nice try though.

But, But its a Cobra! LOL

LOL- the rest of the world, or the rest of the ATI fanboys basking in their last few days of having something to talk about? "Proud Catalyst Tester"

Haha, If anything I'm a Mopar fanboy, especially late 60's early 70's, there are no stupid video cards that make a reasonable analogy to any decent Mopar Muscle car...its an insult to all that is right in the world:) that faux Mustang Cobra comes close though.;)

The sound of a 60's muscle car V8 though a nice dual exhaust = sweet music:music: :)

The sound of noisy computer components = noise :frown: :disgust:

Disagree Old Fart. I can honestly say if everything were reversed, and ATI had the card that was a little slower, much rarer with the Flow FX on it, I'd buy it.

If the x800XT came with a peltier to get it up to speed with a 6800U, I'd be there.

Sometimes it's just a lot cooler to have a big noisey piece of equipment than a quiet one. (e.g. .44 magnum pistol, Harley Davidson motorcycle, muscle car, JBL speakers, bass boat with 200hp outboard, etc..)

To you a fan that's a little louder is bad, to some of us it's impressive. I can tell you right now I am waaaaayyyyyy more impressed with the flowfx than I the rinkey dink tin fan that came on my 9700Pro and 9800Pro. (even the guy I traded it to made me put a Silencer on it for him, the 9800Pro stock fan is it's badge of shame)

I didn't like the little fans on my 9700P or 9800P either. Too noisy, I replaced them both with the Arctic Cooling Silencer (nice piece of HW).

I'm a quiet PC kind of guy, so the Flow FX is obviously not for me. Harley V Twin, V8 muscle car (any nice sounding engine for that matter) is great. A noisy PC inside my house, is not. Its about as appealing as a Civic ricer with the coffee can exhaust system. I think it is pretty rare to find someone who prefers a noisy system.

A PC is just a device to do things. I dont find any components in them "cool" or collectable. A video card is just a piece of it that does a job, just like the CPU or HDD. Whichever one does it the fastest without making a bunch of unnecessary noise is what I use. Its getting more challenging as time goes on to do this. Clock speeds are getting higher, speed is getting higher I like what nV did with the variable speed GPU 2D and 3D mode on the 5900 cards. I'm waiting to see what the cooling solutions on the 6800 and 420 cards turn out to be. Who knows, I may just stick with the 9800P for awhile. Its not like I even have ANY time to play games these days anyway!:(

We'll have to agree to disagree there: A case with a glass side and some LEDs on the fans inside, an interesting cooling solution for a cpu or video card, a well designed speaker set- I like this kind of stuff. A beige box with a couple of white cubes for speakers and a generic looking 17" monitor- meh.

while i don't like noise, something my wife said to me rings rather true.. since i can't afford to rebuild an old muscle car atm, my pc has become my "toy". she finds it amusing i tinker with it so much lol.. but in a way it's no different than changing the oil on my old rs/ss - i enjoyed doing it. hate doing it on my infinity tho - that's just a car and changing oil is "work".

i guess that's why i have a liquid cooled cpu, uv lights, vga silencer, side window, etc. and am always tinkering with how to make it faster, or quieter, or cooler looking.. i mean.. do i really NEED thx speakers for my pc?

we all have our own likes and dislikes when it comes to "hobbies".. i mean, not everyone can appreciate a classic car either ;)

I don't really see the point of collecting a 5800 though. Maybe thats just because I'm not a fan of Nvidia. I like to pull for the underdog.

I disagree that you're an enthusiast. Why?

1. The 9800Pro is generic. They had 80%+ of the high end market, last I saw. The 9800Pro is about as "enthusiast" to video cards as Budweiser is to beer.

2. The 5800 is "silly looking"? First of all the 9800Pro is generic looking. If you take 100 different video cards, lay them on a table, the 9800 Pro would be indiscernible to the rest. It could be anything. It should be plain white and say "video card" on the side. The 5800U has a unique, expensive, huge and elaborate cooling system. It stands out, and I've seen a LOT of posts about 9800 owners ditching their generic HSFs for , what-yep, a FLOWFX clone Silencer. I've seen a LOT of posts about people wanting a FlowFX like solution on the 6800s as well. I haven't seen anyone saying, "Dammit! Why didn't they put a little tin fan on the 6800 like the 9800Pro has?!?!"

3. It's loud? Ever heard one? You know the thing about those MP3s you download is how do you know how loud to play your speakers? You hear a vacuum like sound, it's true, but it's no louder than my son's computer with a big OCer HSF on the cpu and a fan on the case. And guess what? It's only audible when you're gaming, and most games have things like car engines, music, explosions, etc that tend to drown out the 5800U. (unless you play w/o sound because those bad ol' noises hurt your sensitive wittle ears?)

Beyond that, enthusiasts who OC have lots of fans in their case if they don't want water in it, and are used to some fan noise.

4. It's "hot"? Since when do enthusiasts have itty bitty cases with inadequate ventilation? Since when do enthusiasts care about some additional heat dissipation because the frequency is cranked up?

No, you say you're an enthusiast Terranboy, but to me you sound more like a cautious fanboy:"Oh no! That beastly 5800U will scare my hamster Percy! My baby sister will cry when she's playing "Barbie's Cathouse"! Heavens to Betsy NO! I'll stick with this nice safe 9800Pro, everyone has one and says they're oh so wonderful! I think my pal Timmy's Grandma is even using one!"

BTW- all you "enthusiasts" still smacking it to your 9800Pros- you should be cursing ATI instead of smacking at them. Ever think what the performance of a 9800 Pro could have been on .13 silicon for the last year? Ever think what it could have been with something like nVidia's 400-437MHz DDR instead of the bargain basement 340MHz crap? Ever think they might have eked some more core speed out with a Silencer type OTES solution? Or are you just happy they gave you the minimum they had to to maintain their slim lead over the 5900s?

Hahahaha, sure man. You can have all that. Hahaha, I'm not a enthusiast. Ok whatever. Hahaha. Since my Radeon9800P is actually plugged into my system and not laying on a table with 100 other cards I really don't care that its plain looking. But hey, I like cool looking cards too.

1. Radeon9800P is generic. Ok sure it is. Because it was the best. You can argue that if you want, but it will only make you look stupid.

2. Radeon9800P is generic looking. Ok Thats fine. But if CardA is slow and unique looking, and CardB is fast and looks plain, like everything else, I'm not going to spent my hard earned money towards the slow card. Thats just stupid. If I was rich, however, sure I would. I'd have a big fat V5 6000 and a 5800U power two systems. But I'm not, and its dumb to buy a card based on fashion.

3. I've never actually heard the thing. I just went by reveiws. My current rig has 4 LED case fans, one slot blower, CPU fan, and two PSU fans. And it quiet enough for me. With all those fans off, I can't even hear the Radeon fan. Ever thought that could be just good engineering?

4. Not going to touch that. I spend to much money on my system to be voiding warrenties and risk frying stuff. Again, if I had the money I'd be pushing this thing as far as it could go.

As to your statement about me being a fanboy. I don't even know how to respond to that. You think I bought this thing because everyone has one, which is a stupid thing to say since I've already said I own a Voodoo5 5500 (along with maybe 200 other people in the world). I bought it because it was the best.

So if you think a enthusiast has to buy cards based on looks, how crappy they are and how rare they are then you can have that title. Its your loss.

Have fun with your 5800U, I'm sure it impresses a lot of people.

First of all, I've never been "out" anything. If I wanted a 9800 whatever, I'd own one. I've been known to spend what they cost on a few cases of beer just to have something palatable to drink around.

Confucious say: "Man who impressed by other man's video card need life, and probably new job".

(i.e. there's only person it has to impress)

Like the hotrod, the tweaked PC is not appreciated by all. I agree with Rollo that certain peices of PC hardware should be admired not for their outright performance/convenience, but for the ideas behind them. For this reason alone do I hope that the 6800 Ultra beats the X800XT. I even hope that the X800XT is a single molex solution. I'll plug two of the molex connectors from my True550 into a 6800 Ultra with pride, show off the performance of the card, and then let em know that if you want to get those kinds of fps you're going to have to pony up and get a real PSU. This isn't some internet appliance, damnit!

btw... Rollo, what kind of HSF do you have? I think you would love any of the large ThermalRight heatsinks paired with a Vantec Tornado. It's the loudest setup I've ever heard, but cools like mad.

On my A64 I just have the stock hsf that came with it. On my 4 year olds 1700+ I have a giant one I got off newegg with a big ball bearing fan they advertised as "for OCing". I don't OC cpus though, just try to buy them fast enough for the job at hand. ;)

It's nice you're in a position to judge both what is a "waste of space" and what we should all do bunny.
I was planning to take the afternoon off today to go canoeing, and fish in a bass tournament tomorrow- is that OK by you?

You don't have to read them if you don't want to Creig. How about you not tell me what to post, and I won't tell you not to post NY Phonebooks of info about 2 year old mid range cards?

God forbid we forget we can mod 9500s into 9500Ps

I don't really care what you post, but as this is a public forum, I have to wonder why you would think I would care if you flame me?
