Hey guys, I just bought a brand new pair of Z640's from buy.com.

I have an MSI motherboard with onboard sound. I also have the S-Bracket that came with it. MSI manual said to put the front speakers in the lineout on the motherboard. The center and subwoofer on the lineout in the s-Bracket, and the Rear speakers on the other input on the S-Bracket. Well, I plugged it in right, and everything going to the subwoofer is plugged in right according to the color.

Well, when I access MSI sound effects manager, I click on the front speakers on the screen and they start to make noise. The rear speakers DO, I repeat they DO make noise when I click on them on the screen. However, when I am playing game, music, or DVD. The rear speakers don't seem to be giving any sound. Is it because of MSI's S-Bracket and onboard sound. What is the problem? I know the rear speakers work, becuase they have sound when I click on them in the MSI Sound Manager.

Should I get a new sound card. I was looking for the Sound Blaster Live 5.1. I think it is around $30-$40. What is wrong with my rear speakers. Somebody please tell me. If anybody has the MSI board and S-Bracket and relpied that would be amazing.

Please help me. Thanks

Have you tried these speakers on another system with a different sound card? It could be the speakers themselves. I would look at a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz for a little bit more if you're going to upgrade. You might as well treat yourself. I've seen them brand new retail box for 50.00. If you really want to go with SB Live 5.1, I would borrow a buddy's first, and see how you like it. I believe Newegg.com sells them for less than 34.00 shipped. Good luck.

The audio source needs to be able to support 4 speaker surround or whatever emulated Dolby Surround you are using. Most software DVD players do not support more than 2 speaker setups unless you upgrade or buy "sound packs". CD music will not play in 4 channels unless the API for your onboard sound is capable of upmixing a stereo signal to 4 speaker surround sound. Games will not give you surround sound unless your onboard supports one of the game's supported surround API's such as EAX, QSound, Dolby Surround etc. Clicking on the MSI sound manager is good, b/c it lets you know that your speaker set-up is correct and that if the audio source and your onboard are capable of 4 speaker surround, it will play in 4 speaker surround.

Newbiepcuser, you said that it may be the speakers themselves, but these speakers worked perfect on my Xbox. I was playing Madden 2003 on my XBox and I could hear the crowd yelling through the back speakers. So, does this mean it is most likely a sound card issue?

If you haven't got a direct answer yet, its your sound card (or lack of one). I had the same problem with my Epox onboard sound. When I clicked the demo thing in the sound properties I could hear sound from the rear speakers, but not while playing games or music.
So I picked my self up a Hercules Gamesurround Muse 5.1 sound card for $30, disabled onboard sound and they all work and sound great.
