Lol customer called in today, yes I occasionaly do pick up the phone.

C: Do you guys sell , like signal jammers?

M: um no sorry we don't have anything like that.

C: Oh. Cause my son has a really bad WOW addiction and he's getting WiFi from the Starbucks downstairs.

I told her she could check out the spy store to see if they had something like that. but seriously what happened to just taking away his laptop till he starts behaving more reasonably?

Or.. you coulda told her the truth.

"Under Canadian law and regulations, the use of jammers is not permitted except in limited circumstances by some federal law-enforcement agencies who have obtained federal cabinet approval" and "penalties for the illegal use of a jammer (which were put on the books in 2005) carry an individual fine of $5,000."

Meh why bother. If she finds one she finds one, like coxmaster said they aren't hard to find. If she doesn't she doesn't. Not like I really care either way. Her real solution here is to take away his laptop like I said.

Tell her to run a microwave intermittently, maybe it'll screw up his ping times. (A microwave will certainly cause distortion on my wireless headset, and reduces throughput over a wireless network due to dropped packets.)

Either you have a really crappy microwave that's leaking or you have crappy Wifi :p I've never noticed anything like this. Though I have to admit that my main computer is wired so not sure I would notice it. Not that it would be very practical anyway.

But seriously what ever happened to PARENTING? I mean if your child's WOW addiction is so bad that it's getting in the way of him performing in school or getting in the way of his proper development then just take away his fucking laptop till he learns to balance his priorities. Buying a jammer is a laughable solution really.

I just remembered a somewhat related story.

Back when I was working in a retail store during high school (2 years ago) I had a man and woman come in asking for software to block certain sites from being accessible. After talking to them for quite a while they opened up about their son (high school age) visting all sorts of pr0n on their computer..

After a bit I realized, I knew their son quite well since he was in my class. He never heard the end of that one

Came home to discover this on my door step! :) Should be a nice boost from my current 920. Only paid $395 US for the two (Intel Retail Edge). Probably shouldn't have gotten the Mobo as I could have gotten the 970 by itself for just 215. I have a better mobo in my current rip, Gigabyte UD3R, but I'm going to be assembling another 2 systems for the house so I'll use it and my current 920 in one of those.

Considering the value it was a little disconcerting that they just left it in front of the door, but I'm happy to have it.

I miss having access to retail edge :(

I got the same motherboard+i7 920 for 200$ a few years ago. I also got the 80GB X-25 for 100$.

Beats me. I've noticed the effect with two different wireless routers, and on my wireless headset - and it happened with 3 different microwaves. (Parents' house, apartment on campus, and also at my own apartment.) It's probably some interference effect caused by the transformer in the microwave.

Yeah, that, pretty much. "Ok, enough computer. Off. Now." And that was it - parents' word was the final word. Yes, sometimes there was room for negotiation, but the rest of the time, there wasn't.

On the other hand, maybe "proper development" for some people peaks at "Can use a toilet reliably and is able to feed self."

Yeah I just learned about Retail Edge about a month ago. I've only been working in computer hardware retail for a few months (been in general retail longer but just started this with my newish job). They really do offer sweet deals. Not sure what the point of it is though. It's pretty easy to earn those chips without actually learning any of the stuff they want you do. I went from 0 chips to 30,000 (Rockstar level) in 3 days, most of the quizzes were obvious or didn't really require you to read or watch the content.

I must say though the design of this board belongs in my Stupid Products thread. An "Extreme" level X58 board with 4 dimms? WTF? Either put 6 dimms slots on the board like every other enthusiast board or leave it at 3. Sure you can use the 4th dimm but it completely misses the point of having a tripple channel design!

Yup just signed up for it a few days ago. Good to hear that they do offer some good stuff. I didn't see anything really exciting when I signed up except free office for mac users. Will have to go through and rack up the point there too so that I can take advantage of good deals when they appear there too. I also signed up for ANDs retail training program, though that doesn't look too special.

Just finished installing the 970. A good 80%+ faster in the POV-Ray benchmark :D Of course that's a best case scenario. Most other things aren't improved that much. Still the overall user experience is definitely a little snappier. Nice!

My Grandmother past away yesterday, Funeral is on Sunday. She was 92. Despite what some of my extended family might want to think I never got to know my grandparents very well. They were of courser very loving and I was one of their "favourites". But they lived out East and I only got to know them through 6 or 7 trips out east (or trips they took out west) when we (or they) would spend a week or so with them (or us). They moved out west here for the last 8 years or so of her life. Unfortunately soon after arriving here she had a fall and broke her hip, this combined with several small strokes she had previously accelerated the progress of the dementia she suffered from. In the past 6 years or so she basically not the same person any more. Can't say that I feel much over her death, hopefully I won't get other extended family members lording this over me as they are wont to do, but that's just the way it is.

RIP Grandma

why not just tell her to password protect the setup menu and turn off the wifi?

or go to the starbucks and have them block his ip?

Umm it's her son's computer and she is obviously not very computer literate. Doubt there is anything she would be able to do that her son couldn't undo in a few minutes. And if she had access to his laptop to do these things then like I said the solution is simple, just take it away as punishment till he learns to balance things out.

As for blocking his "IP" what you mean is filtering out his MAC address. The router in Starbucks actually is the one that assigns him an IP, not the other way around. I very much doubt they would be willing to do this as it would be far too much trouble for them and there would be no way for them to verify her story. As a company they wouldn't want to touch any case like that with a 10 foot poll. Besides even if they did block his MAC address there are ways around that too.

ya, that basically what i meant was to block the MAC. and she could set a password to the BIOS, it would be a bit more difficult for him to reenable it if the wifi was diabled. and also depends on how old this kid is and who is paying for the account.
