Congrat to Lockheed, the brass probably didn't like the Boeing's unconventional design. This is like one of biggest defense contract in history. We won't see any real deployment of the JSF until 2010. This is still not a sure thing, Congress might get stupid and cut the whole thing.

This is like one of biggest defense contract in history.

Actually THE biggest according to CNN. $200 B, although I hear boeing may contribute.

Lockheed won't see the majority of the money for a few years to come. This JSF thing is like a jack of all trade. Fighter/bomber, a jump jet version for the Marine and British Navy.

Boeing will have a hand in the development of the plane (as Lockeed would if Boeing landed the contract). The government doesn't want to put all the eggs in one basket, so there will be parts, contracted out to Boeing to do. Lockeed needed this much more than Boeing considering Boeing does still produce C17's, attack helicopters and has a completely seperate civilian line of planes.

This will be the first jump jet fighter that can travel faster than the speed of sound.

No specs on it yet? With this, and the f-22, we'll completely rule the airs. Wait, i'm unfamiliar with this. This is a different plane then the F-22 right? Anyways, boeing does have some experience with fighters since they took mcdonnel douglas in a few years back.

Yes the F-22 Raptor is different. It is basically a everything jet.... It has the bombing power of a Stealth Bomber and the agility of a f-16. but it costs a bunch.

Hmmmm.......this from CNN completely contradicts that opinion............

<< Undersecretary of Defense Pete Aldridge said conditions of the contract do not require Lockheed-Martin to share any of the work with Boeing, but added that the government would not stop them from doing so.

"While the Boeing team was not selected, they did an excellent job in the process," Aldridge said. "If Lockheed-Martin wishes to use the unique talents of Boeing they may do so."
