How about instead of a pissing match offer a REAL class on guns. Teach people how to use correctly, safely, when to use them, and how to keep them away from kids and thieves. That and also the laws of the state and local area. Like when you can legally use them, when NOT to use them, how to transport them legally, etc…

Instead all we get is pissing matches between politicians and the nut jobs on each extreme saying see!!! every time.

I don't think he's advocating guns and self-defense here so much as trying to scare people about the layoffs. He's basically saying you'd better get a gun because the police aren't coming to help you, that is unless you cancel the layoffs. Civil servants love this type of fear mongering when their jobs are on the line.

As much as I agree with his overall message, which is true even if police funding is at its peak, I'm inclined to think this as well. Would also explain the mayor's empty "fuck you" of a response.
