The only thing that bothers me about this is that there is always going to be that one @sshole cop that writes you a ticket whether or not your gear is CARB approved.

It is possible to upgrade an import and still stay smog legal. GReddy's turbocharger kits are CARB approved. Try convincing a cop of that.

Enviro-weenies like you are exactly why I don't have cats on my car. I hope you like my smog. This has been going on for a long time anywhere. Any car that looks or sounds fast always gets pulled over. Pretty much the price of owning a nice/modified car. I don't like it one bit, but hey that is in Cali. You all have been screwed up for a while now. Oh Birmingham is considering emissions testing. Good thing I moved my registration to Northeast Alabama(very rural area). Not like you couldn't bribe someone anyway to pass you. I think it is stupid for Bham to test anyway. If they would get Alabama Power from building a new Coal Power plant every other week then emmissions would be pretty clean in Bham considering steel is DEAD in Bham now(thank you Japan and South America).

I would like to know why lots of people with no cats on newer mustangs pass the emissions "sniffer" but not the visual test. Oh it might be because car don't put out that much emissions without cats anymore.

I see you know nothing of how california smog laws work. A smog-illegal car does not neccessraily make any more pollution than a Toyota Prius. If I were to take the headers off my car, and replace them with almost identical headers by a different manufacturer, the car would most likely no longer be legal. Why? Not because it makes any more pollution, but because the manufacturer of the headers didn't want to spend roughly $15,000 getting the California Air Resource Board to certify thier product. It's illegal cause it's not certified, not because it's dirty. the CARB can suck on the tailpipe of a car with no cats, for all I care. They're such a load of crap.
Oh, and if the CARB certification sticker were to fall off my supercharger, the car would no longer be smog legal. Also, I'd have to ship the blower back to the manufacturer to have them put a new sticker on it, cause it's illegal to give out the stickers without the parts.

Also: do any of you actually beleive that people will stop street racing because they got a smog ticket?

That wasnt the point of this thread. The point is that they will be pulling over cars that LOOK like they could be smog illegal. By that definition, they could pull over a car with clear brake lights because "he may have a aftermarket illegal cat. converter." Do you see the problem with this?

Call it profiling, that's what it is. Tough Fvck. In this world, appearance matters. If you give off a certain appearance, expect others to react accordingly. I drive a stock 1999 VW Passat. I highly doubt I'm in violation of any laws.

At the same time, I cannot, and will not support policy that violates our Fourth Amendment rights. If you want to stop street racers and smoggers, do so without violating basic civil rights.

I was pulled over about two months ago for my exhaust on my 96 Talon by a Massachusetts State Trooper for being too loud. Then two weeks before that I was pulled over for my window tint. Then a month before that I was stopped by another trooper for a license plate frame. My entire car is legal so I never got a ticket but it still pisses me off.

Because people modify their cars to have way too much power than they were designed for, they lose control, and kill people. They can't have cops sitting at every street light for 8 hours every night to catch people in the act, so instead they try to stop people from modifying their cars, and use the smog rules to do this.

I like it how whenever police do something, it isn't called "doing their job", it's called "harassing the public". And they are stopping a small percentage of the people... the ones who are most likely to be committing the crimes. Would it make you feel better if they pulled over mom's in mini vans for the same reason? Yeah, let's waste our time with that, let the real criminals go free, just so we don't offend people.

I'm sorry I have to say this YOU ARE AN IDIOT. I guess you agree with unreasonable search and seizure too? Like what if they wanted to just search your house without a warrant for drugs? They would be saving lives by cracking down on drugs, and you have nothing to hide right? How many people do you think die a year from street racing? Do you think it is anywhere near the number of people that die from say getting hit by lightning? People do die, but this new policy is simply a tool the police are using to get more money out of people in the form of tickets. If I decide to put a bunch of NOS stickers on my car and a huge wing, it is ok for every cop in town to take time out of my day to make sure I am emissions legal? Did you know that it is illegal to use NOS but not to use it? (if you use it it is violation emission standards) but just because I have it doesn't mean I use it, and they have no right to search me. I have said it before and I will say it again: The bill of rights should be required reading in schools.
