To be fair, I wouldn't want to force it either. Nothing worse than wrecking a new toy. OP you should call Toshiba.
i agree, just hoping the nerd herd had some good advice. This has protective sheets but you cant get to them because you cant open the fooking thing. I am now looking for a locking screw as mentioned earlier...
 
	According to the toshiba site, there's a "security lock" slot on the right side of the base. Perhaps that has something to do with the screen ? Check to see if there's a small tool in the box that you may have overlooked ?
One of my first scanners had this kind of locking mechanism for the screen since there was no latch. This laptop appears to have the same kind of design functionality.
