Liteon DVD 4X burner at Walmart for $98.87

Easygoing

I hope this hasn't been posted before. The current Walmat ad shows a Lite On 4X DVD+-R/RW dual format rewritable drive for $98.87, SKU LDW401SWIWM

I saw an 8x Liteon at my local Wal-Mart yesterday for the same price. Black, but I didn't get model numbers or anything. Although I guess there's only one 8x Liteon burner at this time. Good deal, but I had just ordered the NEC from Newegg. Oh well, it's all good.

These drives are the 451s models and can be upgraded via firmware to a 8x in about a minute.
So if your google skills are up to par, want a better drive than a btc (junk) and dont want to mess with rebates not a bad deal at all.

Are they all 451s or are some of them 411s? Any tips as to what serial numbers and manufacture dates to look for to ensure getting a 451?

All of the ones I have seen at Walmart have a a December 2003 production date. I'm pretty sure these are 451s - the one I bought is. It took all of 60 minutes of searching the web to find all of the necessary files and flash it to a 851s.

That is NICE!!! 😀

Hello Folks,

There appears to be some confusion with the Lite On DVD Recorder capabilities that Wal-Mart is advertising in this week's flyer.

"Easygoing" initial posting states that the Lite On SKU LDW401SWIWM recorder that Wal-Mart currently advertising in this weeks flyer is a dual format recorder. This incorrect. The SKU LDW401S capabilities are LDW-401S (4X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD+R/RW). This is not a dual format recorder.

The following is a quick synopsis of Lite On DVD Recorders capabilities.

LDW-401S (4X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD+R/RW)

LDW-411S (4X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 4X(-R) 2X(-RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD±R/RW)

LDW-451S (4X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 4X(-R) 2X(-RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD±R/RW)

LDW-811S (8X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 4X(-R) 2X(-RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD±R/RW)

LDW-851S (8X(+R) 4X(+RW) & 4X(-R) 2X(-RW) & 40/24/40/12) (DVD±R/RW)

I just didn't want forum members to be unaware of the capabilities of Lite On DVD Recorder that Wal-Mart is advertising in this week's flyer.

The ones I saw were all 451s models at my wal-mart.

BTC's may not be junk, but they're definitely not Lite-ons.

i just picked up an emprex 4x dual at frys for $79, flashed to dangersbrothers rcpfree 48 firmware, but i can't get any of the dvds it produces to play on my toshiba sd6109 player (i know it's the player because the same dvds play on my govideo and apex units), anyways...any dvds produced on my nec 4x + unit play on the toshiba. same media, same everything.

anyways, here is a good source for the btc 1004/1008 burners: BTC

so in closing, i'm off to frys to return my btc and will be stopping by the walmart to look for a 451

Apparently WM doesn't know what they're selling either:

The model number is incorrect in the ad, but the picture is correct.

If you are looking for the files needed to upgrade the drive to an 8 speed DVD+R, DO NOT USE any of the stuff that has to do with the 411 to 811 conversion. The 451 to 851 is a much simpler, less dangerous(to your drive) process.

From personal experience; had two Lite-on burners, the biggest POS's ever. I also have a 3 year-old BTC DVD-ROM drive that still works like a charm today.

I saw the black bezel 4x drives at my local Wal-Mart, too. I wonder if one of the Wally-World employees within the corporation ordered a mega-load of black bezel drives? Being Wal-Mart is of the conservative type, I would figure that they would just stock "basic beige" drives.

Well I just flashed my 451 to an 851S and it was cake, reads my drive as an 8X Lite On. Also a big added plus is that I can now burn my TDK 4X discs at 8X, which I was unable to do on my BTC IO Magic.

So maybe I stand corrected.

😉

Anyway, quick question to anyone that knows. The bin that I patched was abin file, however the new files from Lite On are an EXE. Is there anywhere to get bin files instead of EXEs on liteons website?

Thanks

I have got the drive and have it flashed to 8x, but I am a noob at DVD burning. Is the included Sonic MyDVD software worth installing? If not, what is the best burning software?
