They also need to come out with Lightscribe Blu-Ray media. It is a real nice way to label discs so you don't end up with a bunch of coasters because you forgot what was on it.

If you have 45 minutes to burn lightscribe (twice - because it is so damned faint the first run you can't see a damned thing) you have enough time to sharpie. :)

My lightscribe drive burns a label in a few minutes. I don't think it's a high end drive, just whatever came with the laptop.

Assuming that I also purchase this enclosure external 5.25 sata tto usb2 enclosure would this work on a modern day laptop with an Intel 4500MHD and the latest powerdvd/windvd?

The 4500MHD should handle the playback okay but I have forgotten the security requirements. FYI I have an HP 2730p elitebook.

The audio on my laptop appears to only be analog out as well:(

Make sure the external enclosure specifically says it works with blu-ray. This has something to do with the chipset. I bought a cheap one and the blu-ray drive doesn't work.

If you're in need of an external, you might want to consider a pre-built external. The panasonic UJ-120 can be had for as low as $80 (blu-ray and DVD burner). I'm not sure of the quality on it though. Self powered through double USB2.

As far as the OP lite-on model, it's damned cheap but it's a reader only, which limits the flexibility. Personally, I'd prefer to spend a few bucks more for a DVD-R model so I can burn the 1-2 DVD's per year on whatever machine I put it in.

uj-120 can be had for less than that.

i've had a uj-120 and it works fine, just since its a laptop drive it only reads at 2x and burns dvds at 8x (max for laptop drives).

you can get them for well under $80. i think geeks.com has it for $55 right now. All the uj-120s that are on the market are because of HP pulls. so they are from HP laptops with new faceplates.

On ebay you can actually also get the BC-5500S which is also HP pulls forl ike $70 now maybe a bit more in an external case. those are SATA slim laptop blu-ray drives by nec /sony

I mean the drive with an external enclosure. Lots of shops are packaging them with a case for $80-$100.

ah. yeah $80 seems about right. you could probably do under $70 on ebay. too bad ion netbooks aren't out yet, since that seems liek a perfect combo.
