This is an interesting thread, just bought my house 5 months ago and the AC is 10 years old, i keep it at 79 but it seems much cooler, it goes up to 84 during the day when we're at work.

I've also thought about replacing it to get better efficieny, but this one works fine.

the AC in my place is 12 years old. we thought about replaceing it but it is working great. So we replaced the terrible heater we had with a new high efficient one. and replaced a few of the worst windows (going to do the rest next summer).

I can see a huge benifit. my heating bill is less. we are not useing as much propane .

now really tempted to buy a new AC unit
its amazing how a new unit can save you money.

Used to be more but since we've put up light blocking curtains on the sun side of the house, it's helped cool down the house quite a bit.

2400 sq ft, 2 adults 2 kids = $270 :( And that's with 27 energy efficient bulbs. We have a fridge in our garage though, and I run 2 servers, our wide screen LCD is on like 10 hours a day + 400 watts for my guitar rig :)

4 humans, 2 dogs, lizard and a bird. damn lizard never turns off lights tho.

oh, this is in arizona. desert, hot most of the time. the 250ish bills are july and august, the rest of the year i closer to the 100 mark. oh, i have a really old block home with crappy sash windows that dont seal. that and a huge doggy door that spews cold air usually. i bet if i replaced the windows and got rid of the dogs my summer bills would drop in half.

I'm in an older apartment with vaulted ceilings too. During the day my blinds are shut tight and the a/c is set at 78-80 degrees. At night the computers are shut off. I don't run the heater in the winter that much if at all.

Our condo was finished in May of this year and is insanely energy efficient. The AC unit never turned on in the month of May and the temperatures ranged from 60 at night to 80 during the day. I had the thermostat set on 74 and it never budged from 72 for the entire month. Our bill that month was $16, haha. I expect this month will be similar since the AC unit only runs during the day and even then it hardly ever turns on. I keep all of the blinds shut tight when we aren't home and I open the windows in the computer room to let the hot air out and keep it away from the rest of the house. Computers go off at night and we use energy efficient bulbs.

4 people, but my oldest daughter is less than 2 yrs old so we only control the temp.
2 3-ton units for central air. (2 story house)

Average bill is 250. It peaks to ~375 in the summer, but one of the reasons is that I have a doggie door to my backyard on my storm door. So the main back door is always open.

I installed some radiant barrier in our attics, and had my dryer vent flushed out. (It piped directly to the roof, so I had to hire someone to do that) and I saw a decrease of ~50/month.

FWIW I was paying 14.5 cents per kWh
