That 16 billion for school construction would have created a lot of jobs.

We already spend more money in school than the rest of the world already. More money spend doesn't equal to better education.

$3.5 billion for energy-efficient federal buildings (original bill $7 billion)

repubs nuke jobs.

$300 million from federal fleet of hybrid vehicles (original bill $600 million)

They had no trouble bailing out the auto companies, but when it comes to giving them work that will benefit the govt in the long run anyway...

$2 billion for broadband

A big fuck you to repubs for that one, cutting jobs and nationwide communications improvements.

$300 million for federal prisons

More jobs lost.

$5.8 billion for Health Prevention Activity

Preventative medicine will SAVE us billions. This was stupid to oppose.

$2 billion for Health Information Technology Grants

The centerpiece of the friggin thing, paperless charts will save lives and improve hospital efficiency while creating jobs.

? $100 million for distance learning

? $98 million for school nutrition

? $50 million for NASA

? $50 million for aeronautics

? $50 million for exploration

? $200 million for National Science Foundation

? $100 million for science

? $1 billion for Head Start/Early Start

? $600 million for Title I (No Child Left Behind)

? $16 billion for school construction

? $3.5 billion for higher education construction

The republican war on science and education continues. The construction money wouldve directly created jobs.

$1.2 billion for retrofitting Project 8 housing

Again wtf, this wouldve created jobs and made the housing more efficient (which the government also has to subsidize and indirectly or directly pay for).

Good thing you removed all of the "pork" retards... :|

I don't understand why a lot of the programs just had their funding cut. Either the program is worth funding or it isn't.

Cutting the funding in half means what? It's kinda-sorta good? Or are we just going to do the jobs half-assed so they cost less and don't perform?

OK, it looks like the dumbest stuff to cut. Fortunately it also looks like the stuff that will be easiest to get passed in different bills. So really it's just a compromise to make stupid crybaby Republicans feel like the "won" something, while they only delay the inevitable and necessary. That's the general level of intelligence and maturity of your average Republican that they fall for this crap.

Good start on the cuts now just cut out another 200-300 billion more. I am glad the education got cut that money would just go to the teachers union. School funding should be a local not national. Any national money spent would just free up money to give the teachers union more money. We already bailed out the UAW no need to bail out the teachers union who are bankrupting the education system.

$122 million for Coast Guard polar icebreaker/cutters

Well global warming should take care of any need for a icebreaker.

This list makes me sad. A lot of that is indeed infrastructure, or at the very least a boon to American industry. What ever happened to the Republicans saying that all those unemployed should turn to education to pick up skills for the "jobs of the future"? Well, they don't seem to want to fund any of that either. Say buh-bye to the last of the American technological and scientific edge.

I would name it the USS Mission Accomplished and when Georgie was tired of clearing brush he could land a fighter jet on it.

Launch from dock, catch fire, sink in the harbor blocking the shipping lanes, get rebuilt for $1T, then run aground.

Or perhaps leave it as a Coast Guard icebreaker USS G.W.B. and send it to the arctic with enough weaponry to just shoot all the evildoing polar bears.

Does that represent the cuts to the spending proposal, or are those programs cut entirely? Most of that was Obama sig issues, so seems a bit F'd to cut it all out.

Why should the govt be subsidising this?? we have private industry for a reason.

Repubs dying a slow death. I guess this is what a last gasp sounds like. Watch for a new, progressive GOP to rear its head sometime in 2010/12.

Because the government is sometimes better suited to do so itself. Education and Infrastructure are two of those areas. Sure, we do have some private industry involved in both those fields, which is healthy, but they don't receive our taxdollars for a reason. Private industry has really done a bang-up job as of late. We don't just delegate everything to private business as we aren't fascists.
