Finally decided to jump onto the dual DVI bandwagon for my non-gaming workstation, currently using a 8500LE with my dual Dell 1800FP's, one analog and one DVI. Narrowed it down to the Matrox P650, Gainward FX PowerPack! Ultra/780 XP, or Asus V9280 and decided to go with the Gainward due to price and features (2nd cheapest, VIVO functionalities, 256mb - useless but it just sounds cool :p, DX9 card even though it's slow as molasses). Merry Xmas to me :)

For all of you dual monitor guys/girls, I suggest the Samsung SyncMaster 152n 15-inch LCD Monitor because of its narrow bezel of just .5". This means your monitor looks huge, and if you are in the dual set up it is almost seamless.

Or you can get twin 19" Viewsonic narrow-bezels and have a monitor that is huge. :p

I think I need a new video card. :Q

1st my current system and setup:

Dell PowerEdge 400SC
3.2G P4 w/HT
512 DDR 400 X 2
Sata Raptor 37G
Matrox G-400 Dual Head
2 Samsung 170S 17" LCD Monitors
and the usual floppy, CD-RW, and stuff

I am not a gamer. I am a stock market trader and use real-time graphics a lot. I'm currently running with a screen resolution of 1152 by 864 pixels. The charting program I'm running actually recommends the highest resolution your system can do. Currently I can run at 1280 by 960 but things are mighty small when I do anything else but my charting program.

Why I'm considering a new video card

For the last three days, I have had my computer monitors skew themselves horizontally. Reminds me of a TV set that has the horizontal controls turned too far in one direction. I have checked all of the connections and they seem to be tight. The only way I have been able to recover is to shut down the machine manually with the Power Button ... and boy do I hate doing that. After waiting a few minutes I restart the computer and the monitors look just fine.

Since the G-400 is several years old and has seen a lot of use I am guessing it is on its final legs. Is that a reasonable conclusion?

I have read this thread about dual-DVI video cards and the vast number of video cards available have my eyes glazing over.

Price is not that important to me for this is my primary work station and I can justify almost any expense though some of those babies that cost over a grand seem a little on the high side to me. lol

Would one of you please be so kind as to offer me a suggestion on which video card I should get? Thanks. :)

If anyone knows of an ATI 9800 Pro or ATI9800XT that supports dual DVI, please post it.

Try two Samsung 213T (or two Dell 2001FP), they both have very small bezels and support 1600x1200 via DVI. 3200x1200 would be pretty sweet and ATI's sual 400MHz ramdacs would actually support this quite nicely.

I think the ATI FireGL X2 would fit the bill (it's a workstation card based on the 9800 Pro, with dual DVI outputs, and a very hefty price), though it's not the right dual-DVI solution for everyone.

My Gainward GeForce 4 PowerPack! Ultra/750XP Golden Sample died on me in the last two weeks. I'm running Dual Dell 2001FPs. I've contacted Gainward about replacing it. The card has yellow flashing blocks all over the screen.

Having Dual DVI is very important, especially with these monitors running at 1600x1200. Hopefully I can get this one swapped out, maybe even replaced with the 5600/5700 version.

I really hope that ATi starts manufacturing some consumer level cards with Dual DVI. I have a 9600Pro in my other computer and running to these duals. Much prettier and WAY faster, but only one DVI.

Having this resource is great, lets keep the lists updated! WAHOO!!

I have been running a Gainward Golden Sample Ultra / 750XP GeForce4 Ti4600 on dual Dell 1800 FP 18" flat panels for the past year with no problems and great displays. I bought the card used from the For Sale section of the AT Forum. I run my machine nonstop 24x7 and except for having to oil the rather loud cooling fan, the card runs very well. The list of dual DVI cards is very much appreciated.

I also will be ready to buy a 9800 based dual dvi card, if any company ever puts one out. I hope Radeon reads this.

Scored a Asus V9280 refurb for $80. I am upgrading from Geforce2 GTS-V, however I don't see any improvement in 2D. Is there anything I need to configure/tweak to bring out pure digital goodness? I have a 18" LCD connected via DVI.

Check to make sure your AGP is running at higher than 1x or 2x.

Make sure you have your motherboards 4-in-one (or equivalent) drivers installed. I've seen people with Windows XP setup correctly but for some motherboards, without those 4-in-one drivers (the bus and usb and other stuff drivers), you can't get AGP higher than 1x. I've seen dramatic 2D increases simply by going from 1x to 4x (and 8x would be good too if that's an option).

The Wildcats are excellent professional cards, and they have fine 2D output, but I've heard of many incompatibilities between non-professional software (i.e. games, etc.) and their drivers. Unfortunately, they're slower releasing drivers now than ATI used to be. :(

I didn't think Parhelias made out too well in games. Nonetheless, I don't think Matrox has faltered from its top spot in 2D.

I hear it's about on the Radeon 8500 level... not too bad in an absolute sense, but not very good at all compared to today's cards. As far as game compatibility, I'd suspect that it would be better than the 3DLabs cards, but then I've never used a Parhelia and haven't done much reading about them either (other than the standard reviews), so take these comments with a grain or two of salt. ;)
