Liquid Nitrogen

get a big bucket of bubble wand stuff( you know the stuff you blow bubbles with) and dump in some N2. Bubbles go everywhere. tons and tons. Also, smach a light bulb (without breaking the tungsten filiment) and stick it in the N2. Then turn on the light. Cool glowy effects. Freezing a can of shaving cream and removing the can from the creeme block is cool too.

Oh, and liquid N2 is below the freezing point of butane. Get a butane canister (like from a torch) and freeze it. then remove the metal casing. Marvel at frozen butane. then light it and watch it burn 🙂

taken from chiwawa's link:

these sound pretty cool

Try taking a ping-pong ball and poking a small hole in it. The hole has to be tangent
to the sphere of the ball. When poking the hole use a pin and the pin should be almost
flat agianst the ball. Basiclly you want a hole in the side of the ball that will cause
the ball to spin. Submerge this ball into the liquid nitrogen and let it fill up.
Place the ball on a table and watch it spin. As the nitrogen goes back to a gas it will
rush out the hole and presto!! It's pretty cool. If it does not spin try placing your
hand on it to warm it to get it started.

One of my favorite demonstrations is to freeze miniature marshmallows and
allow the participants to eat them. The thermal mass is quite low, thus
there is little danger of injury, but if eaten quickly, they still create a
small cloud of vapor.
The marshmallows are not as messy as other frozen foods. Frozen Tootsie
Rolls are also very good.

you could pour a few drops into your hand and roll it around the palm of your hand like dice. at first contact, some of it will vaporize and then it will create a barrier layer that allows you to roll it around. eventually the rest of it will vaporize at once.

This also works when you pour it in your mouth (probably even better), although I wouldn't recommend doing such a thing. You gotta be careful not to get the liquid nitrogen on your teeth while pouring and always exhale while the liquid is still in your mouth.
My AP chem teacher did that for us - it was pretty damn cool. He also put a piece of dry ice in his mouth (kept it moving so it didn't freeze and stick to his mouth) and made it look like he had smoke coming out of his mouth - also pretty neat.

LN rocks.

Thanks for that link! Great stuff.

Hmm, what about heating up a glass bottle in boiling water, then sticking it into the Liquid Nitro? Is Liquid Nitro N02?

liquid Nitrogen is Nitrogen just liquid or in other words N2(l) instead of N2(g)

I have 5 liters of Liquid Nitrogen. Any really cool things I can do with it? I already froze a flower and then shattered it. What else should I do? Any neat expirments that really show its properties?

doesnt show the properties of N2(l) but if u can get hold of a HT-Supraconductor u could do these neat magnet floating tricks with it....

or u could get one of those clamp bike locks (a cheap one) freeze it and then immmidiately smash it with a hammer - should brak into pieces unless its some high grade very ductile steel (thats why a cheap one) - but maybe that jsut gives those kids ideas....

From that list a few posts back:

Freeze a can of shaving cream and then peel the can away from the

cream. Put the canless cream into someone's car. Let the oven-like

heat from the car's sitting in the sun defrost the shaving cream.

2 cans will fill an entire car.

We'd always modify supersoakers to tolerate the cold and have squirt gun fights. Always fun till somebody shatters an eye.

I saw a movie once where some guy stuck his arm into Liquid nitrogen to get a ring or something and when he pulled it out some other guy hit him and it shattered his arm all over the place. Don't even think of doing this!!!

But if you do, dont forget to take PICS. 😉

I have heard you can put a can of shaving cream in it, then cut the can open and take out the shaving cream as a block which as it thaws will expand to full size.

That would be awesome! Cut it into slabs and sling it under somebody's door in university dorms.

Coke bottles... and lots of them.

Put ~1/4 cup in each one and close them real good. Drive around your town and put them in random places.
