If you've got sealable containers, pour some of the liquid nitrogen in it, seal it, set it on the floor, and then run. Fast. 🙂

actually the container it comes in should be sealed. I get it tomorrow. Im not sure how they keep the vapor from blowing the thing up. But I guess tomorrow ill see. I have to get it to the physics lab so I wont be able to play. But on friday, I have it for the weekend. The main reason is to impress the 10th/11th grade high schoolers.

Most of those containers are double layered with a vacuum in between.

When I say "sealable container", I mean eppendorf tubes, plastic jars, etc. 🙂

you could pour a few drops into your hand and roll it around the palm of your hand like dice. at first contact, some of it will vaporize and then it will create a barrier layer that allows you to roll it around. eventually the rest of it will vaporize at once.

This also works when you pour it in your mouth (probably even better), although I wouldn't recommend doing such a thing. You gotta be careful not to get the liquid nitrogen on your teeth while pouring and always exhale while the liquid is still in your mouth.

oh, and do not swallow

ahhh. If its a sunny day, such a thing could be done!

hmm... not sure if I want to try that. You sure?

i'm not kidding. i've done it. i've also seen others do it. we were bored in lab.

maybe a brave student would want to try?

No way in hell could you get me to try that.... lol.

For anyone taking college Physics right now and are using the Resnick (sp?)/Halliday physics book, turn to the back of the book and read about the author. Crazy guy. He's the one who poured the liquid nitrogen in his mouth (and cracked a tooth in the process) and also stuck his hand in boiling iron or steel or some other metal.

I've put the liquid in compressed air cans in a zip loc bag... It pops if you put enough.

damn, where's killbat when you need him? i'm sure he'd have multiple great ideas for this!

u really need to find that thread about the supercooling an overclocked computer - got the thing running so cold it wasn't even funny. kets see if i can find it somewhere....

I have 5 liters of Liquid Nitrogen. Any really cool things I can do with it? I already froze a flower and then shattered it. What else should I do? Any neat expirments that really show its properties?

:Q :Q :Q I JUST JIZZED MY PANTS!

I COULD TAKE OVER THE WORLD WITH ONLY FREAKING HALF THAT! OMFG!

😉

At work we have a large cylinder of liquid N2 to cool a GC/MS down to sub-ambient temperatures for some volatile analysis.

About the only thing I have ever done is as I was moving a full tank maybe open the nozzle just a bit and try to spray somebody with it. Or just collect the condensed ice on the outside and toss at people.

All right, so far we got the hotdog trick, and the ball trick. Any other cool ideas? Something quick and easy to set up. I guess I could set something up over night.

My father had access to liquid helium a few years ago. At school they made ice cream using the liquid nitrogen and other stuff.

I've got one.
My friend told me that in his physical chem class the TA was talking about explosives and showed them something with LN2. He poured some (no idea how much) into a coke bottle which he sealed and attached to a rock. He then dropped the bottle (and rock) in a barrel of water (to prevent anything dangerous from flying out when it blows). Apparently it made one hell of an explosion, his girlfriend said she heard it from her apartment about a block away.

Cool way to demonstrate how much gases expand when they go from liquid to gas form. 🙂

at work when we're done with the liquid nitrogen container, we stick a latex glove over the opening of the container, tape it securely so it doesn't come off, and then walk away. one time i was talking to a principal scientist in a lab, and i saw the glove expanding like crazy right beside him. he didn't notice, but i could barely keep myself from laughing out loud.

it's also fun to pour liquid nitrogen on a bucket of dry ice, then pouring hot water in it.
