Well, I just installed Webmin on the new box, took about five minutes to get Samba up and working. All three Windows machines on the network are connecting just fine.:)

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I went to bed early last night after one night without sleep and several hours reading how-tos this forum and online manuals :)

First I'd like to thank everybody who's responded to my cry for help: I really apreciate all the help you're giving me!!! :D

Pinball:
-Yes I'm running a firewall, the ZoneAlarm, but I've set local security to low so I don't think that should be a problem... I'll try without it after work since I didn't get around to that yesterday...
-No the win2k box hasn't got a full dns name it's a member of a workgroup (as far as I understand this the two are not possible to do at the same time)
-Yes the share is visible (no $)-Yes "Linux" was a user I added in win2k just for this purpose and I setup permissions for the share to be for everyone

LD:
-I've only got one win2k box so there is only local :D Anyway thanks for the effort ;)

Joe O:
-The samba version is the one that comes with mandrake 7.1, I believe that answers all your samba questions doesn't it?
-See above just a workgroup
-/me puts on newbiehat/ Primary domain controller??? huh?
-Yes I've got some shares with the appropriate permissions (I'm beginning to doubt myself since more people are asking about this...)-No I don't have 2 or more NT machines but the shares were working fine when I was at a LAN party two weeks ago! :D
-I've checked http://www.samba.org before and the online documentation I could find was definitly not aimed at my level... more like a couple of eiffel towers above or something :(
-And yes I'd like you to go over the smb.conf once I come home I'll email it to you (never mind the sig. :D)

Russ: I tried webmin yesterday (that was one of my main priorities yesterday :)) Unfortunately I don't have your savvy since you made it in 5 mins. and I still haven't got it after like 3-4 hours struggling with it (mucking about in webmin can be addicting you know:D)
<RANT>WHY DID YOU GET IT UP IN 5 MIN. WHEN I STILL CAN'T RUN HUH? WHERE'S THE FAIRNESS IN THAT!!!</RANT>

Well that's about it isn't it... we'll see how this thing flies within a couple of days I hope :D Oh and the root thing... after reading about that here I figured why don't I follow this advice huh... tried running as an ordinary user and guess what dnetc wouldn't work :( It keeps ranting about some permissions so I logged in as root and changed the permissions for the whole dir and it still keeps the same rant... after mucking about with different configs for this for about 30-45 mins (I'm slow OK?) I decided to go back to the way things were when I at least can run the client as rooot:)

I'll be back later with some more info on how I'm doing any guidance is still greatly apreciated ;)

See ya'll later

Edit: just some spelling and grammar probably a lot I didn't catch!

Short note about PDC :

A windows NT domain must have a primary domain controller, which is the server that manages security and stuff on the domain. It may additionaly have backup domain comtrollers (BDCs) which replicate the security database, and of which one gets promoted to PDC, should the original have a problem.

It is way more powerful and hasslefree to admin an NT network using this scheme than a mere workgroup, once you figure out the way it works.

Your machine can be in a workgroup & have a full domain name at the same time. (just in case.. i mean host.domain.org, not an NT Domain)
For some reason this seems to matter when connecting from linux.

Joe O>
Tnx, i didn't know that.. & spent hours finding something that was actally on my harddisk :)

Well good and not so good news here...

Now I CAN SEE the linux box whenever I go into the browseable network thingie in win2k... I still can't go into the linux box tho' since there seems to be absolutely no combination of user/password it'll accept :( Got an idea that this might be the encrypted password thing but have no idea how to make that work... FYI encrypted passwords is turned on in the linux box!

I still can't see any shares from the linux box and now I've managed the incredible feat of forgetting username/password for WebMin so I can't get into that and fiddle around either... Actually tried a re-install but it just told me to use the username/password I entered before :( Now how do I uninstall somehing like this huh... really liked the proggie but it's useless right now!

This domain thing has really got me stumped what's the difference between an NT domain and a full domain? To me it seems like the full domain thing is an internet domain and I sure as h¤#l ain't got that... And how do you setup a NT domain... and what's the point ... well as to what this is I still have no idea so...

See you later

Does the entry in Workgroup under Network match the entry in samba.conf?
Is the netbios name unique?

I was going to wait with questions till you sent me your samba.conf file, but we'll try it this way.

What is your entry for security?
You did say that you have encrypt passwords=yes

What is your entry for domain logons?

Let's try to do this wihout NT domains for now. By the way SAMBA can be a Domain Logon server for NT workstations.

How do you feel about downloading the source for SAMBA and recompiling? The reason I ask is that Mandrake 7.1 distributes SAMBA 2.06 which has 5 or so problems with regard to Windows 2000. These are fixed in 2.07

Does anyone know how close RedHat and Mandrake Distributions are?

On your NT box how big are your disk clusters?

Joe O: Oh god... good you reminded me :) I'll mail it right NOW!!! I hope a lot of the questions you ask are answered by that because I sure don't understand very much :( Everything until Samba can act as a logon is very cryptic to me except for encryptedpasswords=yes! YES! :) As for the recompiling thing... I think I've answered that already... I have absolutely NO idea where to even start doing that :( Compiling source and all that is just so much mumbojumbo to me :( As for the closeness between redhat and mandrake... one of mandrakes main "pr" points is it's 100% compatible with redhat .. dunno if that helps any?!? And BTW: I've got redhat 6.2 as well (gotta love that 2Mb/s at work combined with a plextor 8X huh?:D)

Well hope you can do some magic on my smb.conf since right now I'm stuck with the interface in netconf and that's not particulary intuitive...

THX again for doing this for me!

SUCCESS!!!!!

Finally it's working I've spent five minutes just cruising around in my own user directory in linux just to enjoy the feeling!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

LOL It was SOOOOOOO easy... the only thing I had to do was give the user a samba password with "smbpasswd" and then it was just FLYIN' :D A guy at work gave me the tip and what do you know hehe it's working now!

I'm so happy now I feel like I'm the king of linux or something... Probably this feelin' last until I try setting up Squid and then I'll feel just as miserable again and come running back to you guys whining for help...

I haven't tried browsing the windows machine from linux but that ain't so critical since I have no problems with just uploading from windows and then moving them around on the linux box...

Anyway THANKS for all the help you guys... YOU ROCK!!!
