Well, I just installed Webmin on the new box, took about five minutes to get Samba up and working. All three Windows machines on the network are connecting just fine.

Hey Lord Demios, yes the box is a dedicated linux box, infact i dusted off about 3: 1.081 GB HD's for it, i was using disk druid,
but i didnt do /boot, i did all of what you said, exept /boot, so after my vaccation ill try that.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I went to bed early last night after one night without sleep and several hours reading how-tos this forum and online manuals
First I'd like to thank everybody who's responded to my cry for help: I really apreciate all the help you're giving me!!!

-Yes I'm running a firewall, the ZoneAlarm, but I've set local security to low so I don't think that should be a problem... I'll try without it after work since I didn't get around to that yesterday...
-No the win2k box hasn't got a full dns name it's a member of a workgroup (as far as I understand this the two are not possible to do at the same time)
-Yes the share is visible (no $)-Yes "Linux" was a user I added in win2k just for this purpose and I setup permissions for the share to be for everyone

Well that's about it isn't it... we'll see how this thing flies within a couple of days I hope Oh and the root thing... after reading about that here I figured why don't I follow this advice huh... tried running as an ordinary user and guess what dnetc wouldn't work It keeps ranting about some permissions so I logged in as root and changed the permissions for the whole dir and it still keeps the same rant... after mucking about with different configs for this for about 30-45 mins (I'm slow OK?) I decided to go back to the way things were when I at least can run the client as rooot
I'll be back later with some more info on how I'm doing any guidance is still greatly apreciated

Short note about PDC :
A windows NT domain must have a primary domain controller, which is the server that manages security and stuff on the domain. It may additionaly have backup domain comtrollers (BDCs) which replicate the security database, and of which one gets promoted to PDC, should the original have a problem.
It is way more powerful and hasslefree to admin an NT network using this scheme than a mere workgroup, once you figure out the way it works.

Your machine can be in a workgroup & have a full domain name at the same time. (just in case.. i mean host.domain.org, not an NT Domain)

Well good and not so good news here...
Now I CAN SEE the linux box whenever I go into the browseable network thingie in win2k... I still can't go into the linux box tho' since there seems to be absolutely no combination of user/password it'll accept Got an idea that this might be the encrypted password thing but have no idea how to make that work... FYI encrypted passwords is turned on in the linux box!
I still can't see any shares from the linux box and now I've managed the incredible feat of forgetting username/password for WebMin so I can't get into that and fiddle around either... Actually tried a re-install but it just told me to use the username/password I entered before Now how do I uninstall somehing like this huh... really liked the proggie but it's useless right now!

I have absolutely NO idea where to even start doing that Compiling source and all that is just so much mumbojumbo to me As for the closeness between redhat and mandrake... one of mandrakes main "pr" points is it's 100% compatible with redhat .. dunno if that helps any?!? And BTW: I've got redhat 6.2 as well (gotta love that 2Mb/s at work combined with a plextor 8X huh?)
Well hope you can do some magic on my smb.conf since right now I'm stuck with the interface in netconf and that's not particulary intuitive...

Finally it's working I've spent five minutes just cruising around in my own user directory in linux just to enjoy the feeling!!!
LOL It was SOOOOOOO easy... the only thing I had to do was give the user a samba password with "smbpasswd" and then it was just FLYIN' A guy at work gave me the tip and what do you know hehe it's working now!
I'm so happy now I feel like I'm the king of linux or something... Probably this feelin' last until I try setting up Squid and then I'll feel just as miserable again and come running back to you guys whining for help...
